The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Lord Guruvayurappan who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He Blesses His Devotees in a standing posture. He has four hands and each hand consists of Panchajanya Conch, Sudarshana Chakra , Kaumodaki Mace and a Lotus, Thulasi respectively. This Temple is also known as Boologa Vaikundam. In the year 1716 the Dutch raided here and looted Guruvayur and set fire to the Western Gopuram which was later rebuilt in the year 1747. In 1766 Hyder Ali attacked Guruvayur and demanded 10,000 fanams in ransom to spare the Temple and the ransom was paid to him. On the request of the Malabar Governor, Shrinivasa Rao, Hyder Ali granted a Devadaya to save this Temple. In the year 1789 Tippu Sulthan invaded Guruvayur and destoryed many smaller shrines of this Temple. The Presiding Deity was buried under the ground and was later installed in the year 1792.  There is a Thulabaaram facility available here wherein a Devotee offers any choicest property equivalent to his weight.   This Temple follows a strict dress code and males with a dothi and bare chested are allowed, whereas for females it's either a Saree or a Churidhar only. Devotees donate elephants to this Temple in order to pay their respect to Lord Guruvayurappan. Though this Temple  follows a strict Dress Code millions of Devotees visit this Temple from across the world in order to get the Blessings of Lord Guruvayurappan.
