Meenakshi Amman Temple is centrally located in Madurai City. Goddess Meenakshi who is an incarnation of Parvathi reigns supreme than Her Consort Sundareshwarar who is a form of Shiva. The Temple was built between 1190 and 1216 AD by King Kulasekara Pandiyan. The Temple's location is even more important since it happens to be on the banks of River Vaigai. During the 14th Century Malik Ghafoor marched into Madurai and simply looted and plundered this Temple. But during the 17th Century Thirumalai Nayakar rebuilt and expanded every nook and corner of the Temple to a great extent. Later the Vijayanagara Rulers took keen interest in this Temple and renovated it. The 1000 Pillared Sculpted Mandapam is the cynosure of all eyes and its known by the name Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal. A Sub Shrine for Sri Ganesh or Mukkuruni Pillayar is also seen and He has a very big fan following here. The Temple has a huge Sacred Pond within its complex and its known by the name Potramarai Kulam. A Golden Lotus structure is built and placed at the centre of the Tank and hence the name Potramarai Kulam. A dip here is considered very sacred to the Devotees. More than one million Devotees throng here during Thirukalyanam. The famous Chithirai festival starts here with a flag hoisting and ends with the Celestial Wedding. Though this is a Saivite Temple, Lord Vishnu is found in many sculptures and rituals here. The Temple covers an area of arond 14 acres. It has a huge compound wall with 4 Entry / Exit Gateways. There are numerous other Shrines for other Gods like Vinayakar, Murugan, Anjaneyar etc. Aarudhra festival, Vasantham festival, Oonjal festival are some of the star attraction here. It is one of the top 10 Temple in India attracting huge Indian and Foreign Devotees.
