Meenakshi Amman Temple is centrally located in Madurai City. Goddess Meenakshi who is an incarnation of Parvathi reigns supreme than Her Consort Sundareshwarar who is a form of Lord Shiva. The Temple was built between 1190 and 1216 AD by King Kulasekara Pandiyan. The Temple's location is even more important since it happens to be on the banks of River Vaigai. During the 14th Century Malik Ghafoor marched into Madurai and simply looted and plundered this Temple. But during the 17th Century Thirumalai Nayakar rebuilt and expanded every nook and corner of the Temple to a great extent. More than one million Devotees throng here during Thirukalyanam. The famous Chithirai festival starts here with a flag hoisting and ends with the Celestial Wedding.
