Pennadam is an important Town in Cuddalore District. Pennadam gains importance since this is the birth place of Kaalingamba Nayanar and Marai Gnanasammandhar. It is also said that Saint Appar got the symbol of Soolam and Idabam from Shiva here. Sri Pralayakaleshwarar Temple is also known as Sri Sudarkozhundeesar Temple. It is one of the Thevaara Paadal Petra Sthalam rated and sung very high by Saint Sundarar. Sri Pralayakaleshwarar Temple is an East facing Temple with a five tiered Rajagopuram. There is a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Nandhi Vaahanam within a four pillared Mandapam. The Nandhi Vaahanam seem to look away from the Temple as though it could sense the Floods or Pralayam in case it happens in Vellar River. The Moolasthanam of the Temple has been built in the Gajabrushtam style of Architecture and hence this Temple is known as Thoonganai Maada Kovil built by Kochenget Cholan. In the Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Pralayakaleshwarar is seen East facing and in the form of a Shiva Lingam. He is also known by the names Sri Sudarkozhundhu Nathar, Sri Kadanthi Nathar and Sri Kaviazhangeesar. It is widely believed that the Presiding Deity is Omnipotent and cures all types of ailments relating to our hands. His Consort here is known as Sri Aamothanambal. She has other names like Sri Kadanthai Nayagi and Sr Azhagiya Kathali. The Ambal is seen in Her Shrine in a standing posture. Festivals like Chithirai Brahmmothsavam, Maha Shivarathri, Thiruvadirai, Karthikai Deepam, Skanda Sashti, Arudra Dharisanam, Thai Poosam, Makarasankaranthi, Panguni Uthiram and Aadi Pooram are celebrated in a grand manner. This Temple is a Parihaara Sthalam for those born with Kettai Star.
