Thiruvathigai is a small village near Panruti in Cuddalore District.  Sree Veerattaneswarar Temple  is one of the famous Paadal Petra Sthalam situated on the banks of River Kedilam. Thiruvadhigai is the birth place of Saint Thirunavukkarasar and naturally he was very fond of this Temple and had Worshipped in this Temple. Saint Thirugnanasammandhar and Saint Sundarar too have sung in praise of this Temple. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is known as Sri Veerattaneswarar or Sri Veerattanaathar or Sri Athigainathar. His Consort in this Temple is known as Sri Thirupurasundari Ambal or Sri Periyanayagi Ambal. This Temple is so huge and unique that it has two massive Rajagopurams. The first Rajagopuram is East facing and is made up of 7 tiers. The second Rajagopuram too is quite big and comprises of 5 tiers and East facing. A multi pillared Mandapam and the Temple Tank or Pushkarani is seen after the first 7 tier Rajagopuram. This Pushkarani is known as Chakkra Theertha Kulam. The  after the second Rajagopuram comprising of 5 tiers is a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhiya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Nandhi Vahanam facing the Moolsathanam. This Temple was built before the Kanchi Kailsanathar Temple and the Thanjavur Temple and hece even the Vimaanms of those Temples were built basing on the Vimanam of this Temple.

The Moolasthanam of this Temple is quite big and is East facing.  The Presiding Deity of Sri Veerattaneswarar is seen in the Sanctum Sanctorum as a Swayambhu Siva Lingam and he looks dazzling to the eyes of His Devotees when seen in the backdrop of naturally lit Oil Lamps. To the rear of this Omnipotent Shiva Lingam is an Image of Sri Shivan and Goddess Parvathy drawn on the rear wall of the Moolasthanam. The Koshtam of the Moolavar Sannadhi has the Idols of Sri Lingothbhavar and Sri Durgai Amman. There is an exclusive Shrine for the Consort who is known as Sri Thirupurasundari Ambal or Sri Periyanayagi or Sri Sivanthavalli Ambal. The speciality of this Shrine is that there is a Sri Yanthram which is kept before the Idol of Sri Ambal in this Shrine.

The inner peripherals of the Temple has Sub Shrines of Sri Vinayagar and Sri Subramaniyar. along with the Urchavamoorthy Idols. The other Sub Shrines seen in this Temple are those of the 63var, Sri Saneeswarar, Sri Thilakavathiyar, Sri Durgai, Sri Siddhi Vinayagar, Valli Devasena Samedha Sri Subramaniyar, Sri Kasi Viswanathar, Goddess Visalakshi, Sri Natarajar, Sri Sivakami Ambal, Sri Sooryan, Sri Bhairavar and the Navagraha Sannadhi. Its a fascinating wonder that the Temple resembles like a Chariot or Thiruther in Tamil. It is widely considered as one of the biggest Temples in Tamil Nadu but despite the size of the Temple it has been kept very clean. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is a Sarakondrai Maram and the Sacred Tank or Pushkarani is known as Sri Chakkra Theertham.
