This Temple is situated in Kattumannarkoil which is otherwise called as Kattumannarkudi. Its ancient names were Chathurvedimangalam and Veeranarayanapuram. Its situated close to the banks of Veeranarayanapuram Lake which in recent times has gained the name of Veeranam Lake. This is the Avathara Sthalam of Sri Aalavandhar who was the grand son of Sri Nathamuni Swamigal. He had the gift of the gab and won a debate with the Chola King and through it obtained half of the Chola Kingdom. He then renounced everything after visiting Srirangam Ranganathar Temple. He was instrumental in finding the greatness of Sri Ramanujar and spreading Vaishnavism. Sri Veera Narayana Perumal Temple has an East facing five tiered Rajagopuram. There is a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a West facing Garudalwar Sannadhi looking towards the Moolasthanam.
The Moolavar in the Sanctum Sanctorum stands East facing solitarily and He is known as Sri Veeranarayana Perumal. His name denotes that He has Veeram or Valour in abundance and hence the name. The Sanctum Sanctorum has the Urchavamoorthy Idols of Sri Rajagopalan with Sri Rukmani and Sri Sathyabama. Before the Idol of Urchavar Sri Rajagopalan there is a Cow and Calf Idol. Apart from this there is a Nithya Urchavar known as Sri Kaattum Mannanar or Sri Azhagiya Mannar or Sri Sundaragopalan. The Urchava Thaayar is known as Sri Sengamalavalli Thaayar. Sri Narayana came here as ‘Mannan’ to hold the hand of Mahalakshmi, and later asked Nathamunigal to share the Divya Prabandham and the Vaishnava Sampradayam to the world at large, he was referred to as ‘Kattum – Mannan – Aanaar’ (the God who came as a King and showed the direction) and hence the town later became Kattu Mannar. It is beleived that Sri Maha Vishnu or Sri Narayanan Himself came for the Swayamvaram of Sri Mahalakshmi who was born to Jhirumbana Rajamaharishi. That time Sri Maha Vishnu or Sri Narayanan had come in His Garuda Vaahanam and defeated all the Kings who had assembled there for the Swayamvaram thereby winning the hand of Sri Mahalakshmi who is known here as Sri Maragathavalli Thaayar. This Temple has a South facing Shrine of Sri Maragathavalli Thaayar who is seen in a sitting posture. Her Shrine is located between the Sub Shrines of Sri Aalavanthar and Sri Nathamunigal.
The unique factor of this Temple there is a Prarthanai Perumal who is known as Sri Shenbaga Mannanar and He is flanked by His Consorts Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi and this is the rareity which is generally not seen in other Vaishnavite Temples. The Temple has a South facing Sub Shrine of Sri Nathamuni. The Aalavanthar's Sannadhi is located North facing just opposite to His grand father's Sub Shrine. This Temple has Sub Shrines of Sri Narasimha Swamy and Sri Varahamoorthy in the peripheral of the Temple.
