Thiruvathigai is a small village located just outside Panruti Town. Thiruvadhigai or Thiripuravadhigai as its known originally, is a village between Panruti and Cuddalore. This Temple is believed to have been built by the Pallava Kings It is believed that Sri Maha Vishnu became the Saram (Arrow) for God Shiva to burn down the Tiripurandhakas and hence He is called Sri Saranarayana Perumal. The Temple has a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhiyaa Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Gardudalwar Sannadhi. Here Sri Saranarayana Perumal is found in Kalyana Thirukkolam with Sridevi Thaayar (no Bhoodevi) as he married the daughter of Margandeya Maharishi here. Hence Markandeya Maharishi is also seen in the Moolasthanam. The Idol of Sri Saranarayana Perumal is made out of a Salagramam and He is seen here in a Kalyana Kolam. The Goddess is called Sri Hemambujavalli and She has a seperate Shrine of Her own. The Utsavar is called Sri Govinda Vinnagarappan. The most unique feature of Sri Saranarayana Perumal Koil is that it is only here that we find Sri Narasimha Swamy in a sleeping posture as Sri Sayana Narasimha with Goddess Lakshmi at His feet. It is believed that the Presiding Deity of Sri Saranarayana Perumal is seen in a reclining posture after having fought a pitched battle with a Demon Vakrasuran and so seems to bbe resting here in a reclined psoture.
Another important historical importance of this Temple is that this Temple has been visited during the times of Mahabharatha by Sri Arjunan who was much fond of this Temple. The feature of this temple is that Sri Ulagalantha Perumal of Thirukovilur visits this Temple on the night of Masi Magam and stays here overnight. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is a Vilva Maram and the Sacred Tank or Pushkarani is known as Sri Garuda Theertham. The Pallava Rulers evinced keen interest on this temple and had promoted it to a great extent. Though this Temple is situated in a narrow street its kept immaculately clean and tidy giving a pious touch.
