  • Sri Sattainathar Temple, Sirkazhi, Mayiladuthurai District, Tamil Nadu

Sirkali is an important Town of the newly formed Mayiladuthurai or Mayavaram District. Sirkali is one of the rarest places ever to have so many different names in the past such as Venupuram, Thonipuram, Brahmmapuram, Pukali, Venkadu, Poonthurai, Sirapuram, Kazhumalam, Kanipuram, Puravam, Saanbai, Kochaivayam etc. No other towns or villages have so many names. Sirkazhi becomes all the more important since it is the birth place of the famous Naayanmar Thirugnana Sammandhar. This is the place where Thirugnana Sammadhar was called as Appa which later was known as Appar. It is also believed that Goddess Parvathy breast feeded Thirugnana Sammandhar with Her Divine Milk. It is one of the 276 Thevara Paadal Petra Sthalam and the 14th such Sthalam situated on the Northern side of River Cauvery in the Chola Nadu. For reasons best known to Sundarar he did not want to step into Sirkazhi and visit this Temple but had the Gopura Dharisanam from the outskirts and Prayed to Him and left.  The Presiding Deity of this Temple is known as Sri Sattainathar, Sri Thoniappar and Sri Brahmmapureeswarar and His Consort is known as Sri Periyanayaki or Sri Thirunilainayaki. It is noteworthy to mention that this is considered as the 11th Sakthi Peedam.

Sri Sattainathar Temple has a colourful seven tiered East facing Rajagopuram. There is a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Nandhi Vaahanam looking West towards the Moolasthanam. Strangely this Temple's Pushkarani or Sacred Tank is seen after the Rajagopuram. The Idols of Somaskandar is seen while approching the Moolasthanam. Just before the Moolasthanam are two huge Idols of the Dwara Baalakas on either side of it seeming to stand guard. It is a unique Temple which comprises of 3 Moolasthanams in the ground floor, First floor and second floor. In the ground floor Sanctum Sanctorum Sri Brahmmapureeswarar is seen along with His Consort Sri Thirunilai Nayagi or Thirupurasundari. In the second floor Moolasthanam Moolasthanam Sri Periyanayakar is seen along with His Consort Periyanayagi Ambal. He is also known as Sri Thoniappar. In the subsequent floor the Presiding Deity of Sri Sattainathar is seen in the form of a Swayambhu Shiva Lingam. Around the Koshtam of the Moolasthanam are the Divine Idols of Sri Vinayagar, Sri Dhakshinamoorthy, Sri Pichadanar, Sri Brahmma, Sri Lingothbhavar, and Sri Chandikeshwarar.

This Temple has Sub Shrines of Sri Vianyagar, Sri Valli Devasena Samedha Sri Subramaniyar, 63 Naayanmaars, Naalvar, Ganga Visajanar or Alinganamoorthy, Santhanakuravar, Muthu Sattainathar, Ashta Bhairavargal and Sapthamathas. There is a Sub Shrine for Sri Natarajar who is known as Sri Koothadum Thevar along with Sivagami Ambal. This Temple has a Jeeva Saamdhi on an elevated podium for Sri Sattaimuni Siddhar. This is one of the rare Temples to have been highly praised by Saint Arunagirinathar, Pattinathar, Sekkizhar, Arunachalakavirayar, Nambiamdaar Nambi and Vallalar. The enire Temple complex is filled with rare inscriptions and Divine Idols of various Gods and Goddess. It is believed that this Temple might belong to the 6th or 7th century. Later the Cholas and the subsequent Vijayanagars, Madurai Naayakas and Pallavas would have revamped the Temple.

The Sthala Virukshams of the Temple are Bhamboo or Moongil Maram and Parijatham or Pavalamalli and there are 22 Theerthams including Brahmma Theertham which are associated with this Temple.Special Poojas are conducted during Somavaram, Sukravaram, Pradhosham, New Moon and Full Moon days and thousands of Devotees visit this Temple during that period. It is considered as an important Maada Kovil. The Administration of this Temple is being taken care and looked after the Dharmapuram Adhineenam.
