Mayiladuthurai or Mayavaram has been a place where many Siddhars had lived in those days. Sri Punugeeswarar Temple has obtained its name from Punakku Siddhar who happened to live here for long before attaining Moksha. The Presiding Deity of this famous Punugiswarar Temple is Lord Punukeeswarar who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. He is in the form of a Shiva Lingam here. His Consort is known as Shantha Nayagi and Santha Nayaki Ambal Blesses Her Devotees from Her Shrine. The Temple is unique in its own way in having two Rajagopurams. The first Rajagopuram is West facing and is 5 tiered whereas the inner 2nd Rajagopuram is 3 tiered. Like all other Shivan Temples there is a Dwajasthamabam, Bali Peedam and a Nandhi Vahanam facing the Moolasthanam. This Temple also has Sub Shrines for Vinayakar, Dakshinamoorthy, Lingothbhavar, Brahmma, Chandikeswarar and Durga. There is a Holy Pushkarani or Sacred Tank located within the Temple premises. Navarathri, Shivarathri, Margazhi Thiruvadhirai, Thiru Karthikai, Sankatahara Chaturthi, Rahu Kaala Pooja, Theipirai Ashtami, Skanda Sashti and Aippasi Annabishekam are celebrated in a grand manner.
