Mayiladuthurai or Mayavaram has been a place where many Siddhars had lived in those days. Sri Punugeeswarar Temple has obtained its name from Punugu Siddhar who happened to live here for long before attaining Moksha. The Temple is unique in its own way in having two Rajagopurams. The first Rajagopuram is West facing and is 5 tiered whereas the inner 2nd Rajagopuram is 3 tiered. Like all other Shivan Temples there is a Dwajasthamabam, a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Nandhi Vahanam facing the Moolasthanam. The Presiding Deity of this famous Sri Punugiswarar Temple is Sri Punukeeswarar who is an incarnation of Sri Shiva. He is in the form of a Shiva Lingam here. Around the Koshtam there are Idols of Vinayakar, Dakshinamoorthy, Lingothbhavar, Brahmma, Chandikeswarar and Durgai. His Consort is known as Sri Shantha Nayagi and Sri Santha Nayaki Ambal Blesses Her Devotees from Her Shrine. There is a Holy Pushkarani or Sacred Tank located within the Temple premises.
It is believed that Indran attended the Yaagam of Daksha and hence not relishing this Shiva grew furious and turned Indran to a Civet Cat which means a Punugu Poonai in Tamil. When Indran pleaded with Shiva, He was adviced to go to Koorai Naadu which is known as Mayiladuthurai or Mayavaram now. Hence Indran came here in the form of a Punugu Poonai and Worshipped Shiva. Pleased with this Shiva gave back Indran His Divine status. Therefore Shiva in this place is Worshipped in the name of Sri Punugeeswarar. This Temple is famous for its Sangabishekam during which Divine Water from River Cauvery is brought through 1008 Sangu or Conch and Abhishekam is done. Navarathri, Pradosham, Maha Shivarathri, Margazhi Thiruvadhirai, Thiru Karthikai, Sankatahara Chathurthi, Raahu Kaala Pooja, Theipirai Ashtami, Skanda Sashti and Aippasi Annabishekam are celebrated in a grand manner.
