Thalaichankadu is a Historical Village in Sirkali Taluk of the newly formed Mayiladuthurai District. Sri Nanmadhiya Perumal Temple is one among the 108 Divaya Desam Temples dedicated to Maha Vishnu. The original name was Thali Sanga Nanmadhiyam which later was called as Thalaichengadu. This is an East facing Temple with a Gopuram which consists of stucco Idols of Sri Maha Vishnu along with His Consorts Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi. The Periya Thiruvadi and Siriya Thiruvadi are seen below that. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is known as Sri Nanmadhiya Perumal who is an incarnation of Maha Vishnu. His Consort here is known as Sri Thalaichanga Nachiyar or Sri Senkamalavalli. The Urchavar Idols which is taken around on a palanquin in procession on festive days is known as Sri Venchudar Perumal. In the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Nanmadhiya Perumal is seen in a standing posture flanked by His Consorts Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi. The Urchavamoorthy Idol of Sri Venchudar Perumal could be seen just beneath the Presiding Deity. It is unique of this Temple to see the Presiding Deity with a Pirai Chandran. The Vimanam built over the Moolasthanam is Ekatha Vesara Vimanam which is otherwise known as Chandra Vimanam.
The inner peripheral of the Temple has the Shrine of the Thaayar Sri Thalaichanga Nachiyar. There are Sub Shrines for Sri Lakshmi Narasimhar, Sri Anjaneya Swamy, Sri Garudalwar, Sri Andal and Sri Senai Mudhalvar. The Mangalasasanam of this Temple is said to be done during the 8th century by Thirumangai Alwar which means that this Temple existed even before that. In all probability this Temple was supposed to have been built by the Chola Rulers King Kochenget Cholan.
The History behind the Temple runs as follows: Chandran was considered on par with Suryan in Power. It is said that Chandran performed a Rajasooya Yaagam in which He was fascinated and attracted by the pulcritude of Dhara who happened to be the wife of Guru. It is alleged that a Son by name Budhan was born to them due to their illicit affair. Knowing this Guru who was in great grief complained to Maha Vishnu and cursed Chanran to be afflicted by leprosy. Not knowing what to do Chandran had no other option but to Pray to Maha Vishnu who later cured Chandran of His deadly leprosy. This Temple is said to have three Pushkaranis or Sacred Tanks known as Chandra Theertham, Amirtha Theertham and Markendeya Theertham. Pavithrosavam, Vaikunda Ekadesi, Navarathri Utsavam, Sri Rama Navami are celebrated in a grand manner. This Temple is a solace and a Parihaara Sthalam for those Devotees who are affected by Chandran.
