Thiruvalaputhur is a small village in Mayiladuthurai Taluk and District. This is an East facing Temple with an Welcome Arch. The Temple has a Nandhi Vaahanam and a Neivedhya Peedam. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Manikka Vannar who is an incarnation of God Shiva. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Manikka Vannar or Sri Rathnapureeswarar. He is seen in the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum in the form of a Shiva Lingam. Around the Koshtam of the Moolavar are the following Idols Narthana Vinayagar, Dhakshinamoorhy, Lingothbhavar, Brahmma, Maha Vishnu, Durgai and Chandikeshwarar. The Vimanam over the Sanctum Sanctorum is known as Vesara Vimanam. He Blesses His Devotees along with His Consort Goddess Brahmma Kunthalambigai or Sri Vandaar Poonguzhali. There is a Sub Shrine for Ashta Naaga Vinayagar which is very famous. In this Sub Shrine the Idol of Ashta Naaga Vinayagar is seen with 8 Snakes all over His body. There are Sub Shrines for Saraswathi, Gajalakshmi, Vinayagar, Subramaniyar, Bhairavar, Chandran, Suryan, Vasuki and Naalvar. This Temple has an exclusive Sub Shrine known as Nataraja Sabhai.

This Temple is built on the Southern Banks of River Kollidam. This Temple is considered as the 83rd Thevara Paadal Petra Sthalam and the 29th Temple on the Northern side of River Cauvery of Chola Nadu. This place is known as Thiruvaloliputhur since God Shiva hid the Sword of Mahabarath Arjuna here where Vaal means Sword Oli means to Hide and Putru means Ant Hill and hence the name Thiruvaloliputrur. Vaikasi Visakam, Avani Vinayakar Chaturthi, Purattasi Navarathri, Masi Maha Shivarathri, Margazhi Thiruvathirai, Panguni Uthram and Thiru Karthikai is celebrated in a grand manner. Special Poojas are performed to Goddess Durga on all Full Moon Day.
