Sri Abirami Samedha Sri Amirthakadeswarar Temple is also known as Sri Abirami Temple. Thirukkadaiyur is a village situated in Mayiladuthurai District. The Presiding Deity is Sri Amirthakadeshwarar who is an incarnation of God Shiva and known to be as a Destroyer of Death. His Consort is Goddess Abhirami an incarnation of Goddess Parvathi. The recently renovated Temple dates back to the 7th Century and was revered in Thevaram. The Temple has 6 daily rituals and 12 annual festivals. This Temple is said to be the main from among the 8 Ashta Veeratanam Temples built in which God Shiva kills the Demons and saves His Devotees. Likewise in this Temple too, God Shiva as Sri Kaala Samhaaramurthy saves young Markandeya from the clutches of Death of Yamadharmarajan.

Though the Presiding Deity in the Sanctum Sanctorum is solitary to look at, it would reveal another reflection of the same Lingam at times. The Presiding Deity is known as Sri Amirthakadeswarar who is in the form of a Shiva Lingam. His Consort here is known as Sri Abirami who is another form of Goddess Parvathi. The Temple also includes a Shrine for Sri Maha Vishnu who is known here as Sri Amirthanarayana Perumal and His Consort Sri Mahalakshmi is known as Sri Amirthavalli. Hence some refer this Temple as Shiva Vishnu Temple. This Temple is associated with few stories and in one of them God Shiva Saves His young Devotee Markandeya from the jaws of Death. At the time of His Death Sri Markandeyan huges tightly the Shiva Lingam and is saved. Another tale refers Abirami Bhattar as an ardent Devotee of Sri Abirami. This is one of the well known Paadal Petra Sthalam. The Temple has two Rajagopurams and it is built in a whopping area of more than 10 acres. The Primary Rajagopuram is made up of 11 tiers and could be seen from a distance too. It is said that the Cholas were primarily instrumental is building this Temple but the Thanajavur Naayak Rulers also had a big hand in promoting this Temple to what it is today.

There are Sub Shrines for Sri Ganesha, Sri Durgai, Sri Dhakshinamoorthy and Sri Chandikeshwarar. The 50th, 60th, 70th, 80th Birthday celebrations of the Devotees are performed here with gay and pomp. The Temple has recently undergone Kumbabishekam and hence the stone walls are all immaculately clean with gorgeous paintings giving a festive look at any time. There are ample number of good hotels for eating and staying since this Temple has a steady inflow of Devotees all through the year. Purattasi Navarathri, Aavani Moolam, Chithirai Vishu, Aadi Thapasu, Thaipoosam, Panguni Brahmmothsavam, Pradosham, Maha Shivarathiri, Thei Pirai Ashtami, Panchami are the festivals that are celebrated in a grand manner. This Temple is worshiped for the Life Longevity of all Devotees.
