This Temple is made up of multiple pillars and most of these have a few Deities or Yaazhi on them. It is said that Chandran fell in love and lust with Brahasbathi's wife Dhara and unknowingly impregnated her. Brahaspathi took up this matter to Sri Brahmma who scolded Chandra and separated the illegal couple. The kid born to Brahasbathi's wife Dhara was Budhan. Pragaspathi cursed Chandra to be afflicted with Ksheya Rogham. Chandra then begs to Prahasbathi for pardon and He was adviced to go to Thiruindhaloor and Pray to Sri Parimala Ranaganathar. Here Chandra Woshipped Maha Vishnu in the form of Sri Parimala Ranaganathar and got back all His lost Powers. The Garuda Mandapam of this Temple has beautiful carvings of the Dasavatharam on its pillars. Kadaimuga Snanam which is otherwise known as Mudavan Muzhukku Festival is celebrated with great fanfare in the Tamil Month of Aippasi. That time taking bath in River Cauvery is considered on par with taking bath in River Ganges. During Vaikasi Viratham or Fasting most Devotees stay back in this Temple to seek His Blessings.
This Temple was supposed to have been built by the Pallava Rulers between the 6th and 8th centuries. The Cholas, the Vijayanagars and the Madurai Naayak Rulers too had a big hand in promoting this Temple.
