Thiru Sempon Sei Temple, Nangur, Mayiladuthurai District, Tamil Nadu

  • Thiru Sempon Sei Temple, Nangur, Mayiladuthurai District, Tamil Nadu

Nangur is a small village located in Sirkali or Sirkazhi Taluk of the newly formed Mayavarm or Mayiladuthurai District. Thiru Sempon Sei Temple is also known as Sri Sempon Arangar Temple or Sri Peruarulaalan Temple. It is one of the 108 Divya Desam dedicated to Maha Vishnu and the Mangalasaasanam done by Sri Thirumangai Alwar. The Consort is known as Goddess Sri Allimaamalar Nachiyar or Sri Allimaamalaraal. This is an East facing Temple with a Gopuram resembling that of the base of a Rajagopuram. The Gopuram has a coloured Idol of Sangu, Chakkaram with a Thirumaan Srichurnam at its centre. On either side of the Gopuram are two coloured Idols of Garudalwars.

There is a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Garudalwar Sannadhi facing West towards the Moolasthanam. The Sanctum Sanctorum of this Temple is East facing and is raised and built elevatedly. In the Moolasthanam the Presiding Deity of Sri Thiru Sempon Sei Arangar or Sri Perarulaalan is seen in a standing posture with Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi flanking Him on either side. There is enough space for the Devotees to circumambulate the Moolasthanam but this is closed for most part of the year and is thrown open only on special occasion. The Vimanam built above the Moolasthanam looks attractive and is known as Kanaka Vimanam. The Consort Is known as Sri Allimaamalaraal or Sri Allimaamalar Nachiyar is found separately in Her East facing Shrine.

This Temple is supposed to have been built during the 7th or 8th century by the Chola Rulers. The Vijayanagara Rulers and the Marata Rulers had a great liking towards this Temple and developed it further. Historically it is said that this Presiding Deity of Sri Thiru Sempon Sei Perumal is self sufficient and had raised His own funds to raise this Temple. This is the reason as to why it is said that Devotees who come and Pray here would be Blessed with immense Wealth for the rest of their life. There is a wide belief that Kasiban of Kanchipuram had lost all his Wealth and finally reached this place to Pray. He recited OM NAMO NARAYANA Mantra 32,000 times in 3 days with a focussed mind. Satisfied with his Prayers and Bakthi Sri Thiru Sempon Sei Arangar gave back all his lost Wealth to Kasiban. Hence such is the Power of this God. There is a reason for calling this Temple as Thiru Sempon Sei Arangar Temple which says that Sri Rama came to the Ashram of Ithrudha Nethra Maharishi on His way back to Ayodhya after vanquishing Ravana. Due to the Brahmmahathi Dosham that Sri Rama had incurred, Ithrudha Nethra Maharishi adviced Sri Rama to make a Golden Cow and Pray here. In accordance with the instructions of the Maharishi Sri Rama made a huge Golden Cow and offered Penance for 4 days at the end of which Sri Rama donated a Golden Cow to a Brahmin. Due to his penury the Brahmin sold the Cow and looked after his expenses and with the balance that he had he built this Temple and hence the name Sempon Sei Temple. This Temple is looked after and managed by the Thirunagar 7 Temples Adhineenam. There are two Theerthams Nithya Pushkarini and Kanaka Theertham pertaining to this Temple. Aipasi Brahmmotsavam, Swathi Star Day, New Moon Day, Garudaseva are celebrated in a grand manner.
