Mayiladuthurai or Mayavaram is an important Temple Town in the newly formed Mayiladuthurai District. This Temple is known as Sri Mayuranatha Swamy Temple or Sri Mayuranathar Temple. It is one of the 276 Theeavara Paadal Petra Sthalam. Tamil Poets namely Gnanasambandhar, Thirunavukkarasar and Arunagirinathar praised this Temple in their hymns. It is one of the 6 Temples which are equilvant to that of Kasi Temples. The other five similar Shivan Temples are those at Thiruvaiyaru, Thiruvidaimaruthur, Thiruvenkadu, Chayavanam and Srivanchiyam. It is believed that this Temple was built during the 7th century. Later during the period of King Uthama Cholan bricks were removed and compensated with stones. Sembiyan Maha Devi had a big hand in constructing and promoting the Temple.
The Temple has a huge 9 tiered Rajagopuram. This Temple complex is built on a whopping 35,200 Square Meters of land. The Vimanam above the Sanctum Sanctorum is called as Tridala Vimanam. There is Dwajasthambam, a Neivedhya Peedam and a Nandhi Vaahanam facing the Moolasthanam. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Mayuranathaswamy who is an incarnation God Shiva. The Presiding Deity is a Swayambu Lingam or Self Manifested Lingam. His Consort Sri Parvathi is called as Sri Abhayambikai here. She is found in Her East facing Shrine in a standing posture with four hands. Facing Her Shrine is a Dwajasthambam, a Neivedhya Peedam and a Nandhi Vaahanam. Her Urchavar Idol is known as Sri Aadi Poora Amman is kept within Her Shrine. Goddess Parvathy incurred the wrath and curse of God Shiva and it is believed that at this Temple Goddess Parvathy was relieved of all Her curses and She got back or regoined Her original form as Sri Abhyambika reuniting with Shiva therefore due to their association Shivan is known as Sri Mayuranathar. This is portrayed in one of the Images in the Temple where Shivan is seen embrasing Parvathy symbolizing their reunion.
Sri Ganesha is known as Agastiya Sandhana Vinayakar since Sage Agasthiyar installed this Deity beneath the Sandal or Sandhana Maram. There are Sub Shrines for Sri Sattainathar, Sri Sekkizhar, Sri Vyakarabadhar, Sri Pathanjali, Sri Gajalakshmi, Sri Arunachaleshwarar, Sri Bhairavar, Sri Muruga, Sri Natarajar and Sri Kuthambai Siddhar who attained Moksham here. Libation or Anointing the lingam with Sandal, Milk, Curd, Turmeric etc are special features of this Temple. There are 3 Sacred Tanks Viz. Brahmma Theertham, Rishaba Theertham and Agasthiya Theertham in this Temple and Devotees are allowed to take a holy dip. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is Mango Tree.Vinayagar Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner. This Temple is considered one of the Pancha Dhakshinamoorthy Sthalam.
The entire Temple barring the Murugan Sub Shrine is maintained by Thiruvavaduthurai Aadheenam and the Murugan's Sub Shrine is taken care of by the Dharmapuram Aadheenam. The Temple is running a Thevara Padasala. There is a huge Temple Chariot.
