Sri Asalathamman Temple is situated on the East Mada Street in Nungambakkam. The Temple is East facing and has a three tiered Rajagopuram with two coloured Dwara Baalaki Idols on it. The Temple also has a compound wall with a East facing gate on top of which two Lion Idols are placed. Though small this Asalathamman Temple is cemented and looks clean. On entering the Temple there is a South facing Sub Shrine on top of which the Idols of the Saptharishis viz. Kashyapa Maharishi, Athri Maharishi, Vasishta Maharishi, Viswamithra Maharishi, Gouthama Maharishi, Jamadagni Maharishi and Bharatwaja Maharishi are seen and flanking them on either side are two Naaga Devatha Idols.

The Moolasthana Mandapam of Sri Asalathamman Temple comprises of multiple pillars which are also painted in different colours. The Gopuram of this Moolasthana Mandapam looks Divine with a stucco Idol of Sri Asalathamman atop it and flanking Her Idol are two sets of Lion. Any Devotee who view this multi pillared Mandapam would be amazed with its look. The first two pillars of this Moolasthana Mandapam bears two coloured Idols of the Dwara Baalakis on them. Devotees may have to climb 5 to 6 steps to enter this multi pillared Moolasthana Mandapam. Each of the pillar here bears a unique Divine stucco Idol thereby making it appealing to the eyes of the onlookers. Even the ceiling or roof of this Moolasthana Mandapam is gorgeously painted with various designs. This Moolasthana Mandapam can very easily accomodate more than 100 Devotees in it.

This Temple does not have a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram. There is a huge gold coloured Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam with in a steel railing. Moving closse to the Moolasthanam is a Tirisoolam or Trident rooted to the flooring. Then there is a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Simha Vaahanam facing the Moolasthanam. There are no Dwara Baalaki Idols before the Moolasthanam but instead to the left is an East facing Sri Vinayagar Idol and looking towards Him is a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Moonjur Vaahanam. To the right of the Moolasthanam is a black Idol of an unknown Sage who might have been connected to this Temple. It is said that this unknown Sage had placated the anger of the Presiding Deity Sri Asalathamman during that time. Many writings about this Temple are impertinent in pointing out this Temple wrongly as a Village Deity or a Village Temple which had safeguarded this area during ancient times. The Purohit of this Temple disowned this theory that had cropped up in many previous writings. He asserts that this was not a Village Deity but instead She came to be known as Sri Pidari Amman in the initial years seething fear and anger to all around Her. Later the unknown Sage mitigated Her furious temper and cooled Her down after which She was called as Sri Asalathamman. The Moolasthanam of this Temple is East facing and in the Sanctum Santorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Asalathamman is seen Blessing Her Devotees in a sitting posture. It is believed hat this Temple was started more than 500 years ago from a modest Anthill or Putru. The Urchavamoorthy Idol of Sri Asalathamman is also seen within the same Moolasthanam. The wooden door of the Moolasthanam is intricately etched with the Images of Ashtalakshmi making it look appealing to the eyes of the Devotees. Also the Moolasthanam could be circumambulated for which the Temple has excellent flooring. Though Devotees can enter this Temple through the East facing Rajagopuram there is another small North facing gate through which Devotees can enter this Temple. Tamil Aadi Month, Navarathri and such similar festivals are celebrated in a grand manner. Since the Temple is located in a narrow road Devotees may find it arduous to park their vehicles around the Temple.
