Sri Bharathwajeswarar Temple is located in a place called Puliyur in Kodambakkam, Chennai. Some refer this Temple as Sri Valeeswarar Temple whereas the Chennaites call this Temple Puliyur Shivan Temple. Sri Baradhwajeswarar Temple in Kodambakkam is an East facing Temple with a small three tier Rajagopuram. In reality Devotees who come by vehicles cannot enter this Street since it is too narrow for any vehicles. Though the Temple is East facing there is another South facing Rajagopuram through which Devotees can come. This South facing Rajagopuram comprises of five tiers.
On entering the Temple premises through the Eastern Rajagopuram there are two West facing Sub Shrines facing the Moolasthanam. These two Sub Shrines pertain to Sri Bharathwaja Maharishi and Sri Vaaleeswarar. It is said that both of them had been to this Temple in the initial years and hence the name of the Temple is known as Sri Bharadwajeswarar Temple or Sri Valeeswarar Temple. There are two different sized Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam, a tall Kodi Maram or Dwajasthambam and a Nandhi Vaahanam beneath a four pillared Mandapam facing the Moolasthanam. Then there is a Maha Mandapam with an East facing Gopuram. The coloured Idols of Sri Shiva, Sri Parvathy, Sri Vinayagar and Sri Murugan are atop this East facing Gopuram. The Maha Mandapam comprises of multiple pillars and each of these pillars are gorgeously painted and embossed with gold coloured Images thereby making it appear still more attractive. Even the ceiling of the Maha Mandapam bears testimony of their craftsmanship. The initial promoters who had a hand in developing Sri Bharadwajeswarar Temple to this extent have been remembered in this Maha Mandapam as Chalukya, Kalyana Chalukya, Naayaks, Kadambar, Krishnadevarayar, Cheras, Cholas, Pandyas, Hoysalas and Kalingaas and their small Idols have been installed a thanksgiving measure. Before entering the Moolasthana Mandapam there is a display board of Snabana Mandapam and Thirugnana Sabhai. At the entrance of these Mandapam there is a North facing Sub Shrine of Sri Ganapathy and a South facing Sub Shrine of Sri Senathipathi.
In the Moolasthana Mandapam the threshold leading to the Moolasthanam is dazzling due to its gold plating. On either side of the threshold are two huge and black Dwara Baalaka Idols who seem to stand guard. In the Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Bharadwajeshwarar is seen East facing and in the form of a Swayambhu Shiva Lingam. He looks captivating and dazzling when seen along with His Naagabharanam. Around the Koshtam of the Moolavars Sannadhi are the Idols of Sri Koshta Ganapathy, Sri Dhakshinamoorthy, Sri Maha Vishnu, Sri Brahmma, Sri Durgai and Sri Chandikeshwarar. Within the same Moolasthana Mandapam there is a Shrine of Sri Swanambigai who is the Consort of Sri Bharathwajeshwarar. The Shrine of Sri Swarnabigai is South facing and She is seen in a standing posture Blessing Her Devotees. A pair of Dwara Baalaki Idols seem to stand guard on either side of the Shrine of Sri Swarnabigai. Close to the Ambal's Shrine there is a South facing Sub Shrine of Sri Natarajar who is seen along with His Consort Sri Sivagami Ambal and Sri Manickavasagar. Opposite to the Sri Natarajar's Sub Shrine are the Idols of Sri Meikanda Sivam, Sri Arulnandhi Sivam, Sri Maraignana Sivam, Sri Umapathy Sivam, Sri Thirugnanasammandhar, Sri Appar, Sri Sundarar, Sri Manickavasagar and Sri Sekkizhar who are all seen in a North facing Sub Shrine. Close to this Sub Shrine are the East facing Idols of Sri Kasi Viswanathar and Sri Snabana Ganapathy.
The outer peripheral of the Temple has a West facing Sub Shrine of Sri Siva Suryan. The Sapthamathas or Saptha Kannigaigal who are known as Sri Brahmmi, Sri Maheswari, Sri Goumari, Sri Vaishnavi, Sri Vaarahi, Sri Indrani and Sri Chamundi are seen together in their North facing Sub Shrine. The outer peripheral has a huge East facing Alankara Mandapam which almost resembles like a Royal Palace. Two Elephant Idols stand guard before this Alankara Mandapam. There are five to six steps leading to this Alankara Mandapam. All the pillars and walls of this Mandapam are intricately designed and carved. The huge ornamental wooden doors gives it a glittering look. Likewise the outer peripheral has an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Baktha Ganapathy. There are two Dwara Baalaka Images seen on either side of the Sub Shrine of Sri Baktha Ganapathy. The Subramaniyar's Sub Shrine in the outer peripheral is also East facing and Sri Vedha Subramaniyar is seen here flanked by His Consorts Srri Vanavalli and Sri Gajavalli. Here too two Dwara Baalaka Images are seen on either side of the Sub Shrine of Sri Vedha Subramaniyar. Then there is a huge Neem Tree beneath which a Shiva Lingam and a Sri Ganapathi Idol are seen East facing. The next East facing Sub Shrine is that of Sri Ramanathar who is seen in the form of a Shiva Lingam. To the rear of this Shiva Lingam is an Ambal Idol embossed on its wall making it look different from the other Sub Shrines. There is a painting of Sri Garudalwar and Sri Anjaneyar at the entrance of the Sub Shrine of Sri Ramanathar. The ceiling of the Sub Shrine of Sri Ramanathar has a coloured Image of a Gowli or Lizard drawn on it making it look similar to Sri Varadharaja Perumal Temple in Kanchipuram. The outer peripheral has a South facing Sub Shrine of Sri Bhairavar who is seen in a standing posture. The Temple's Navagraha Sannadhi is seen West facing with facilities to circumambulate the Sannadhi. The West facing Yaaga Salai of this temple looks fascinatiing with 2 Elephant Idols kept on either side of its entrance. A visit to this Temple gives a Devotee a sense of joy and extra ordinary satisfaction since the Temple is kept and maintained in such a grand manner for which the Temple Administration has to be lauded. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
