  • Sri Jambulingeswarar Temple, Sembakkam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Sembakkam is a suburb of Chennai close to Rajakilpakkam. Sri Jambhulingeshwarar Temple is an East facing Temple having entrances from the East, West and North. There is a five tiered Rajagopuram in the North. There is a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Nandhi Vaahnam facing the Moolasthanam. The Urchavamoorthy Idols are kept in an enclosure close to the Moolasthanam. There are two huge Dwara baalaka Idols standing guard at the entrance of the Sanctum Sanctorum. In the Moolasthanam Sri Jambulingeswarar is seen East facing in the form of a Swayambhu Shiva Lingam and He is an incarnation of Sri Shiva.Around the Koshtam there are Idols of Vinayagar, Dhakshinamoorthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahmma, Durgai and Chandikeshwarar. The Maha Mandapam is beautifully designed with the stucco Idols of Maha Ganapathy, Valli Devasena samedha Subramaniyar and Idumban on its pillar. The Ambal is known as Sri Akilandeshwari Ambal and She is seen in Her South facing Shrine in a standing posture with Abhaya Hasta posture. Another unique factor of this Temple is that the Bronze Idol of Kanchi Paramachariya can be seen inside the Shrine of Goddess Akhilandeshwari. This Temple is disperate from other similar Temples since there is a Paramapatha Vaasal near the Maha Vishnu Koshtam. Generally Paramapatha Vaasal are seen only in Vishnu Temples. Apart from this there are Sub Shrines for Sri Natarajan along with Sivagami Ambal, Suryan, Bhairavar and a West facing Swamy Ayyappan. The Temple also has a Navagraha Sannadhi.
