Thirisoolam or Thirisulam is a Chennai Suburb which is located just 1 Km away from Chennai International Airport. Sri Thirisoolanathar Temple is an ancient Temple which was built during the times of Kulothunga Cholan I. It is believed that King Sundara Cholan evinced keen interest on this Temple and developed it further. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Thirisulanathar who is in the form of an East facing Shiva Lingam and is considered as an incarnation of Shiva. Facing the Moolasthanam is a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam, a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram and a Nandhi Vaahanam which is kept beneath a four pillared Mandapam facing the Moolasthanam. Around the Koshtam of the Moolasthanam there are Idols of Vinayagar, Dhakshinamoorthy, Lingothbhavar, Brahmma and Durgai. The Consort of Sri Thirisoolanathar is Sri Thiripurasundari who is an incarnation of Goddess Parvathy. The Shrine of Goddess Thiripura Sundari is South facing and the Deity is seen in a standing posture. Initially there was another Shrine for Sri Thiripurasundari Ambal but this Shrine was totally brought down and damaged during the days of Moghul Invasion. There are Sub Shrines of Sri Srinivas Perumal, Kasi Viswanathar, Kasi Visalakshi, Valli Devasena Samedha Arumugham, Naalvar, Bhairavar etc. The Temple's 16 faced Markandeya Lingam is known as Shodasaa Lingam. The Temple also has a Navagraha Sannadhi. In the North Eastern corner of the outer peripheral there are Sub Shrines for Sri Iyyappa Swamy and Adhi Shankarar.
This Temple is built in an area surrounded by hillocks. It is widely believed that King Kulothunga Chola hid his treasures somewhere beneath this Temple. It is also said that King Kulothunga Chola had constructed a Subway or Tunnel leading to a nearby hill known as Pancha Pandava Hill where the King had built his palace then. In those days Churam denoted a hill and hence this place was called as Thiruchuram and later it came to be known as Thirisoolam. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is a Vilva Maram and the Sacred Tank or Pushkarani is known as Brahmma Theertham.
