Sri Marundeeswarar Temple is also called as Sri Oushadhapureeswarar Temple. Initially this place was called as Marundhupallam which gradually changed itself to Marungapallam. This Temple was supposed to have been built during the days of the early Cholas even before the 10th century. Later King Sarfoji II who suffered from an incurable Venn Kushtam or Leukoderma came here and Prayed to Lord Marundheeswarar on the advice of his Rajaguru. It was then that a miracle happened and the King was gradually relieved from this Leukoderma and became almost normal as ever. So natuarally King Serfoji took keen interest on this Temple and developed it on many fronts bringing it to this level. The main gate of this Temple is North facing but the Rajagopuram of this Temple is East facing and is built of three tiers. Close to the Rajagopuram are lovely vibrant Idols of Anjaneya Swamy carrying the Sanjeevi Hills, different Idols of Shiva Lingam and King Serfoji performing the Kumbabishekam of this Temple. All these Idols have been given gorgeous paintings which look eye captivating. The Temple History or the Sthala Varalaaru is neatly displayed beneath these coloured Idols. On entering the Temple there is a Neivedhya Peedam, a Nandhi Vaahanam and an Idol of Anirudha Brahmma Rayanar who had a big hand in building and promoting this Temple and these are all West facing towards the Sanctum Sanctorum. There are two black Dwara Baalaga Idols who stand guard before the Moolasthanam. In the Divine Sanctum Sanctorum Sri Marundeeswarar or Oushadhapureeswarar who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva is seen East facing in the form of a Shiva Lingam. Within the same Moolasthanam there is an Idol of Maruthuva Vinayagar. The Consort of Sri Marundeeswarar is Sri Periya Nayagi or Sri Maruthuva Nayagi who is seen in Her Shrine in a standing posture facing South. There are two black Dwara Baalagi Idols standing guard before the Ambal's Shrine. Between the Ambal's Shrine and the Shrine of Sri Marundeeswarar there is an Idol of Sri Aadhi Periyanayagi. Around the Koshtam are the Idols of Dhakshinamoorthy, Lingothbhavar, Brahmma, Durgai and Chandikeshwarar. The outer peripheral of the Temple has a Sub Shrine for Sri Maha Ganapathy who is East facing. Likewise there is another East facing Sub Shrine for Valli Devasena Samedha Subramaniar. There is a West facing Sub Shrine in which the Idols of Anugraha Saneeswara Bhagwan, Sri Kaala Bhairavar, Maha Vishnu, Lakshmi Narayanar and Surya Bhagwan are all seen. Outside this Shrine are the Idols of Maandhi and Kuligann. On top of this Sub Shrine are 12 coloured Images depicting the Raasis. Generally the Saneeswarar Bhagwan could be circumambulated in all other Temples, but not here. In this Temple the Saneeswara Bhagwan could be circumambulated together with other Gods from around the compound. The inner walls of the Temple have many coloured Images and this includes a Naalvar Image comprising of Thirugnana Sammandhar, Thirunavukkarasar, Sundarar and Manikavasagar. Outside the Temple is the Sthala Viruksham which is a Paathiri Maram and opposite to it is the Pushkarani or Sacred Tank known as Marundhu Theertham or Dhanvanthri Theertham. There is a belief that this Pushkarani cures all health issues on taking a hold dip. It is said that a portion of the Sanjeevi Hills broke down while Lord Hanuman was carrying it to Sri Lanka and a part fell here and thus the Pushkarani was created. King Sarfoji had dug a Tunnel from this Temple heading towards Manora and this was available till a few decades ago. Then the Temple adminstration had to close one end of the Tunnel for accomodating more Devotees. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner. This Temple is well known for performing Ayush Homam. Since its firmly believed that a visit to this Temple cures the Devotees of all their diseases this Temple is rightly construed as a Noi Nivarthi Sthalam.
