The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Lord Arunachaleswarar or Annamalayar who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. He blesses His Devotees along with His Consort Goddess Unnamalai Amman who is none other than Goddess Parvathy. This Temple is known as Panja Boodha Sthalam. Since Lord Shiva appeared here as Fire this Temple is also known as Agni Sthalam. Nayanars praised this Temple in Thevaram because of which this Temple is considered as one the 275 Padal Petra Sthalam. It is believed that performing a Girivalam or a Circumambulation around the Arunachala Hill during New Moon and Full Moon Days would fulfull the Wishes of the Devotees performing it. Since Lord Shiva is considered as Fire God every year during Thiru Karthigai a Deepam is lit on the Arunachala Hill which will last long for ten consecutive days. This Temple is one of the largest Temple in India which is built on a whopping ten hectares of land. There are four Rajagopurams facing all directions out of which the East facing Rajagopuram is the tallest of all and is eleven tiered and is 217 feet high. This Temple was built by Chola Kings in the year 9th Century and was later developed by Rulers of Vijayanagara, Sangama, Saluva and Tuluva Dynasties. Every year lakhs of Devotees visit this Temple from every nook and corner of the Wolrd.
