Sri Vedhapureeswarar Temple is located in a placed called Thiruvathur or Thiruvathipuram in Cheyyar Town. The full name of the Temple is Sri Balagujambigai Udanurai Sri Vedapureeswarar Temple. This is an ancient Temple and is one of the Thevaara Paadal Petra Sthalam. Sri Veda Pureeswarar Temple in Cheyyar has an East facing Rajagopuram comprising of seven tiers and the entire structure is full of Idols. There are 8 stone pillars before the Rajagopuram. Devotees may have to climb down a few steps to reach the level of the Temple premises. Beyond it there is a multi pillared Mandapam whose flooring and ceiling are full of gorgeous paintings. The upper half of the multi pillared Mandapam bears various coloured paintings which are attractive. To the right of this multi pillared Mandapam is the Nootrukaal Mandapam and it has been named as Sri Balagujambigai Udanurai Sri Vedapureeswarar Nootrukaal Mandapam. To the left of the multi pillared Mandapam is an empty four pillared Mandapam. Next to this is the Temple's Sacred Tank or Pushkarani known as Kalyana Kodi Theertham. Then there is a North facing Sub Shrine of Sri Vanni Mara Vinayagar. Facing the Sub Shrine of Sri Vannimara Vinayagar is a small Neivedhya Peedam and a Moonjur Vaahanam. Close to this is an East facing Annadhana Koodam which has been built exquisitely with an Idol of Goddess Annapoorani at its top. The design of the Annadhana Koodam is unique and anyone looking at it would have a second glance at it for the way it has been designed and built.
Then there is a Neivedhya Peedam or a Bali Peedam next to it is the Magimai Nandhi which is seated in a four pillared Mandapam and looking at the road instead of looking towards the Moolasthanam. A Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram is seen next to the Mahimai Nandhi. Then there is a Gopuram on which the Idols of Shivan, Parvathy, Siddhi Buddhi Vinayagar, Valli Devasena Samedha Subramaniyar, Natarajar and Naalvar are seen. The Temple's second Rajagopuram which is East facing and comprising of five tiers is seen here. Going beyond the second Rajagopuram is the Santhana Kuravar Naalvar's Sub Shrine comprising of Meikandar, Aunandhi Sivam, Maraignana Sammandhar and Umapathy Sivam. Closeby is an huge Idol of a Palm Tree and beneath it is a Shiva Lingam and a North facing Idol of Saint Thirugnana Sammandhar. Devotees may have to climb 4 to 5 steps to reach the Maha Mandapam and there are Sub Shrines for Sri Narthana Ganapathy and Sri Shanmugar to the left and right of this entrance. Just before the Moolasthana Mandapam there are enclosures in which the Urchavamoorthy Thirumenigal, 63 Naayanmaar Urchavamoorthi Idols and Somaskandar Urchavamoorthy Idol are seen.
In the East facing Moolasthanam there are two huge Idols of Dwara Baalakas who are known as Dhindi and Mundi and they are supposed to guard the Moolasthanam. Facing the Moolasthanam is a small Nandhi Vaahanam. In the Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Vedhapureeswarar is seen in the form of an East facing Shiva Lingam and is considered as an incarnation of God Shiva. Around the Koshtam of the Presiding Deity are the Idols of Ganapathy, Dhakshinamoorthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahmma, Durgai, Adhi Kesava Perumal and Chandikeshwarar. In the inner peripheral there are two West facing Shiva Lingams known as Ilangam 108 Isaithozhil Maha Lingam. Close to this is a North facing Sub Shrine of Samaya Kuravar Naalvar comprising of Thirugnana Sammadhar, Thirunavukkarasar, Sundarar and Manikavasagar. The 63 Naayanmaars Idol are lined up in tandem along with the Idol of Sekkizhar and they are all North facing. Close to this is the North facing Idols of Saptha Kaanniagaigal comprising of Brahmmi, Maheswari, Chamundi, Gowmari, Vaarahi, Indrani and Vaishnavi. In the inner peripheral there are East facing Idols of Sri Valapuri Vinayagar, Sri Vallaba Ganapathy, Parasiva Panchalingams, Naga Devathas and Sri Valli Devasena Samedha Shanmugar. Within the same inner peripheral there is a coloured Idol of Sri Dhandayuthapani who is seen South facing and in a standing posture. Close to this is the South facing Sub Shrine of Sri Bhairavar. The Temple has West facing Sub Shrines of Suryan, Thirumaal and Chandran. The Temple also has an East facing Sub Shrine in which a small Ganapathy Idol is seen along with that of Sri Dhandayuthapani and another Idol. Close to this is the East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Thunbam Neekum Karunai Pozhi Nagalingam who is seen under a 12 headed Serpant.
The Consort of this Temple is Sri Ilamulai Nayagi or Sri Balagujambigai whose Shrine is unique. Along with the usual Neivedhya Peedam and Simha Vaahanam. This Ambal also has a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram meant for Her. There are two South facing Dwara Baalakis known as Vijaya and Jaya who stand guard to Her Moolasthanam. In the Sanctum Sanctorum Sri Balagujambigai is seen in a standing posture facing South with a Maalai in Her hand. Sri Meenakshi Ambal is seen in Her East facing Shrine in a standing posture. Around the Koshtam of Sri Balagujambikai there are Idols of Sri Vinayagar, Sri Mahalakshmi, Sri Maha Saraswathi, Sri Brahmmi, Sri Vaishnavi and Sri Chandikeshwari. There is a South facing Palliyarai and close to this is the Temple's Thulabaara facility for the Devotees. The Temple has an exclusive Navagraha Sannadhi.
The outer peripheral of the Temple has a massive compound wall and an Alankaara Mandapam. There is an East facing Sub Shrine of Panai Maram with a Shiva Lingam known as Thala Maram Panai Gnanasammandhar Lingam. The Temple's outer peripheral has an East facing Sub Shrine of Thirumoolanathar (Chidambaram, Agaya Lingam), West facing Sub Shrine of Sri Kalathinathar (Kaalahasthi, Vayu Lingam), an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Jambhukeshwarar (Thiruvanaikaval Jala or Appu Lingam), an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Arunachaleshwarar (Thiruvannamalai Agni Lingam) and an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Ekambareshwarar (Kanchipuram Prithvi Lingam) and a South facing Sub Shrine of Chandikeshwarar. Within the same outer peripheral there is a South facing Sub Shrine of Sri Aadavallan or Sri Natarajar along with Sri Sivagami Ambal and Manikavasagar.
There is a Madapalli and a Yaaga Saalai in the outer peripheral. The Temple's Office is located next to the Sub Shrine of Sri Vannimara Vinayagar. There is a display board in one of the Mandapams of the Temple which says that the Rajagopuram and the two compound walls were built by the Vijayanagara Ruler King Krishnadevaraya, the Nootrukaal Mandapam by King Thirumalai Nayakar, the Sanctum Sanctorum by Simha Varman II, the Panchabootha Thalangal by King Paranthaga Cholan, the Ambal's Shrine and the Mukha Mandapam by King Raja Raja Cholan and Maara Varman, the Kalyana Mandapam by Sambuvarayars and the Corridors by Vikrama Cholan. The Temple's Car or Chariot is safely enclosed and kept outside the Temple premises. There is a well maintained Ghoshala for this Temple. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is a Male Palmyra Tree or Panai Maram and the Sacred Tank or Pushkarani which is located within the premises is known as Kalyana Kodi Theertham. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
