Arulmigu Ponniamman Thirukoil in situated in Karambakkam, near Porur, Chennai 600 116. This Temple is said to have been built 1200 years ago and is one of the most ancient Temples ever. Recently this Temple has been given a facelift and renovated to give it a very modern look. The Temple is built slightly away from the Arcot Road in a residential locality of Porur. The Temple has a South facing Welcome Arch close to which is the Temple's flower shop. Beyond this is a coulored five tiered South facing Rajagopuram. The Main Deity of Sri Ponniamman is facing North, whereas the Temple Entrance is South facing. A Garden or a Nandhavanam is located on the two sides of the Temple and a Pushkarani or a Sacred Tank is located just outside the Main Gate. On entering the Rajagopuram the Maha Mandapam is actually North facing and a small Fish symbol could be seen at the base of the maha Mandapam indicating this the Temple was built during the Pallava regime around 1200 years ago.Devotees may have to climb around 4 to 5 steps to reach the Maha Mandapam. In the North facing Moolasthanam Sri Ponni Amman is seen in a seated posture and there is an Urchavamoorthy Idol too within the same Sanctum Sanctorum. The Moolasthanam is Air Conditioned and has a gold plated threshold with two identical Dwara Balakis standing guard on either side of it and they are known as Dwara Sakthis. All the pillars of the Maha Mandapam are beatifully decorated and embossed with Idols of Yali on them.To the rear of the Moolasthanam is the Temple's Charriot which is safely secured in a glass enclosure. In the outer peripheral there is a Sub Shrine which is East facing and there are Idols of the Annamaargal who are considered to have served the Presiding Goddess of Sri Ponni Amman. The outer peripheral has an elevated podium on top of which there is a Simha Vahanam, a Neivedhiya Peedam and a Trident facing the Moolasthanam. The basement of this elevated podium has a West facing Lakshmi Kuberar, two North facing Fishes, an East facing Kamadhenu and a South facing Naga Kanni Idols. This Amman is said to be very powerful and Tamil Aadi Months are said to attract a lot of Devotees. Many feel that the Temple has grown in wealth and fame since it lets out the Temple for TV shootings. This Temple could be seen in most Tamil TV Channel Serials. There is a Temple Office functioning within the Temple premises. The Temple is located ina residential area and hence parking of vehicles could be cumbersome on festive days.
