Porur has become a very important business and residential locality of South West Chennai. Sri Ramanatheeswarar Temple is located in a busy and congested street in Porur to the rear of Porur Electricity Board Office. This Temple has an five tiered East facing Rajagopuram. Devotees may have to climb 4 to 5 steps to reach the Temple premises. The Presiding Deity of this Temple Sri Ramanathaeeswarar. In the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Ramanatha Eswarar is seen East facing and in the form of a huge Shiva Lingam. There are two huge Dwara Baalaka Idols who stand guard before the Moolasthanam. Facing the Moolasthanam is a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, Neivedhya Peedam and a Nandhi Vaahanam. The Moolasthana Mandapam is made up of multiple pillars. The rear of the Moolasthanam has been built elegantly looking it resemble to the rear of an Elephant and is called as the Gajabrustam style. Around the Koshtam of the Moolavar are the Idols of Ganapathy, Dhakshinamoorthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahmma, Durgai and Chandikeshwarar. The Consort of Sri Ramanatheeswarar is known as Sri Sivagama Sundari Ambal who is seen in Her South facing Shrine in a standing posture.
Another important aspect of this Temple is that they have a Nelli Maram beneath which a Divine Shiva Lingam is seen and Prayed. It is believed that Sri Rama during His days had come here and offered Pooja to this Shiva Lingam. There is an Anjaneya Idol too close to the Shiva Lingam. The peripheral of the Temple has East facing Sub Shrines of Santhana Vijaya Ganapathy and Sri Valli Devasena Samedha Subramaniyar. There are South facing Sub Shrines of Sri Natarajar along with Sivagami Ambal and Sri Kaala Bhairavar. The Navagraha Sannadhi and the Temple's Palliyarai are seen closeby. Likewise the Sub Shrines of Suryan and Chandran face Westwards towards the Moolasthanam. Oil Lamps have to be lit only on the Light Stand meant for it. It is said that this Temple was built by the great Chola Ruler King Kulothunga Cholan II and hence the Moolasthanam is obviously built in the Chola's Thoongaanai Maadam style. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is Neem Tree.
