Sri Madhuvaneshwarar Temple is located in Nannilam in Thiruvarur District just opposite to the Government Girls Higher Secondary School. The full name of the Temple is Sri Madhuvana Nayagi Samedha Sri Madhuvaneswara Swamy Perungkovil. It is one among the 276 Thevara Paadal Petra Sthalam and the 71st Siva Sthalam to be built on the Southern Banks of River Kaveri. This Temple is deemed to be one of the Maada Kovil or Maada Temple to have been built by the Chola King Kochenganan.

There is a Welcome Arch leading to the Temple and this Arch contains Idols of Shiva, Parvathy, Ganapathy and Murugan. This Temple which is East facing does not have a Rajagopuram. At the Main entrance there is a Gopuram and facing it is a small Sub Shrine for Vinayagar. Like all Shiva Temples there is a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam, a Dwajasthambam and a Nandhi Vaahanam placed within a four pillared Mandapam and facing the Sanctum Sanctorum. There are two Sub Shrines in the ground floor in which Sri Brahmmapureeswarar and Sri Agastheeswarar are seen in the form of a Shiva Lingam.

Since being a Maada Kovil Devotees may have to climb around 10 to 15 steps to reach the first floor where Sri Madhuvaneshwarar is seen in His Shrine in the form of a Swayambhu Shiva Lingam. Sri Madhuvaneshwarar is also called as Sri Brahadeeswarar, Sri Prakasanathar and Sri Devaranyeshwarar. At the threshold of the Moolasthanam there are Idols for Vinayagar and Bala Murugan who are seen as Dwara Baalakas. It is distressing to note that though there are Sub Shrines for Natarajar and Somaskandar no Idols are found there but instead Oil barrel, empty cement bags and such other waste materials had been dumped there. It is learnt that many such Idols from this Temple have been removed the HR & CE officials to unknown places citing flimsy reasons of insecurity in this Temple. Around the Koshtam of Sri Madhuvaneshwarar Narthana Ganapathy, Dhakshinamoorthy, Lingothbhavar and Brahmma Idols are seen. It is believed that in the ground floor Chandikeshwarar is seen Praying to Sri Madhuvaneshwarar. Hence Devotees are not allowed to circumambulate but instead could see and Worship Durgai by taking a small detour.

In the ground floor Goddess Madhuvana Nayagi is seen in Her Shrine and She is also called Sri Periyanayagi or Sri Deva Kaanthara Nayagi. A Sub Shrine was built on 24.08.2022 in which the Chola King who built this Temple King Kochenganan's Idol has been installed along with the Naalvar Idols. There is a Sub Shrine in the ground floor where two Pillayar are kept along with the Naagar Idol and hence it is called as Sri Rettai Pillayar Sannadhi. There are Sub Shrines for Sri Valli Devaena Samedha Subramaniyar, Sri Mahalakshmi, Sri Gajalakshmi, Naga Devathas, Sri Saneeswaran, Sri Bhairavar and Navagrahams. Likewise Chandikeshwarar, Chandikeshwari and Chitragupthan occupy another Shrine.

There is a Ghoshala and a store room to pile up the haystack. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is Vilva Maram and the Theertham is Soola Theeram and Brahmma Theertham. There is a Madapalli or Temple Kitchen and the Temple Office too functions within the Temple premises. There is a general belief that those who have Neurological disorders or Nervous problem get them treated by coming here and Praying to Sri Madhuvaneshwarar. Vaikasi Visagam,Aani Thirumanjanam, Aadi Pooram, Pradhaosam, Thiru Karthigai, Maha Shivarathiri are celebrated in a grand manner.
