Poovanur is a small village in Needamangalam Taluk of Thiruvarur District. This Temple is considered to be one of the 276 Padal Petra Sthalam and is the 103rd Paadal Petra Temple on the Southern Bank of River Kaveri. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Chaturanga Vallabhanathar or Sri Pushpavananathar and He is an incarnation of God Shiva. The Presiding Deity is a Self Manifested Swayambu Lingam here. There is a story behind the name of Sri Chathuranga Vallabanathar which says that Shiva played a game of Chathurangam and won the hand of Ambal and therefore He is called as Sri Chathuranga Vallabanathar. He Blesses His Devotees along with His Consorts Rajarajeswari and Sri Karpagavalli Ambal. This Temple has a five tiered East facing Rajagopuram. The space beneath the Rajagopuram has Idols of Gopura Vinayagar and Bala Dhandayuthapani. Apart from this Rajagopuram there is another three tier Rajagopuram. Facing the Moolasthanam is a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Nandhi Vaahanam within a four pillared Mandapam. In the Sanctum sanctorum Sri Sathuranga Vaalabanathar is seen East facing and in the form of a Shiva Lingam. The Koshtam around the Moolasthanam has Idols of Brahmma, Maha Vishnu, Arthanareeswarar, Pichadanar, Durgai and Chandikeshwarar.
There are separate Shrines for Sri Karpagavalli and Sri Rajarajeswari and they are seen in a standing posture. The Temple has Sub Shrines for Sri Kasi Viswanathar, Sri Lakshmi Narayanar, Sri Vasunena Mannan, Sri Iyyanar, Sri agasthiyar, Naalvar, Sri Ganapathy, Sri Valli Devasena Samedha Subramaniyar, Sri Kathandaramar, Sri Mahalakshmi, Sri Pasupathyeeswarar, Sri Bhairavar and Sri Sooryan. The Temple also has a Navagraha Sannadhi.
There is an Idol of Sri Chamundeshwari in a sitting posture in one of the frontal Mandapams. This is the second Temple in South India next to Mysore where Goddess Chamundeeswari can be seen. Worshipping to Goddess Chamundeeswari Ambal here will remove all impediments of Marriage, Business Issue and also give to Give Child Boon. Devotees who suffer from Rat or other Poisonous bites visit this Temple and tie a root on their hands and take a Holy Dip in this Temple's Sacred Tank. It is believed that Maha Vishnu, Brahmma, Vinayakar, Muruga and Indhra visited this Temple to worship God Shiva. Ten Day Chithirai Chamundeeswari festival, Vaikasi Visakam, Avani Moolam, Aadi Pooram, Aipasi Annabhishekam, Karthikai Deepam, Margazhi Thiruvadhirai, Thai Poosam, Maha Shivarathri are celebrated in a grand manner here. A Herbal Root is given in this Temple for those Devotees who come with Rodent or Insect Bites and it is said that if this Herbal Root is taken the effect of the Poison comes down miraculously. This Temple is also said to heal Devotees who suffer from Asthma or any such Lung Infected Diseases.
