Sri Kothandaramar Temple in Mudikondan is also known as Mudikondan Sri Kothandaramaswamy Temple and it is located in Thiruvarur District. The ancient name of Mudikondam is Maguda Varthanapuri. This is an East facing Temple but is devoid of any conventional Rajagopuram. Instead the Temple has an East facing Gopuram at the centre of which there are coloured Idols of Sri Kothandaramar, Goddess Seetha, Sri Lakshmana and Sri Anjaneya Swamy. They are flanked on both sides by two Garudalwar Idols. 

On entering the Temple premises there is a South facing Shrine of Sri Yoga Sayana Perumal. The Gopuram of this Shrine has the coloured Idols of Sri Ranganatha Perumal in His Sayana Kolam beneath a Divine Adhi Seshan. His Consorts Sri Devi, Bhoo Devi and Sri Brahmma are seen along with Him. They are flanked on either side by two Garudalwars. Facing this Shrine is a North facing Idol of Sri Garudalwar who seems to look towards the Moolasthanam of Sri Yoga Sayana Perumal. To the rear of Sri Garudalwar is a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam. It is said that there was a Dwajasthambam during ancient times and that it was destroyed during the Moghul Invasion. Heading towards the Moolasthanam are two East facing Idols of Sri Thumbikai Alwar and Sri Krishnar. Then there are two standing coloured Idols of the Dwara Baalakas who are seen on either side of the threshold. In the Sanctum Sanctorum Sri Yoga Sayana Perumal is seen beneath His Aadhi Seshan in a reclined posture. Seen along with Him are His Consorts Sri Devi, Bhoo Devi, Sri Brahmma and Sage Bharatwajar. It is believed that this Yoga Sayana Perumal's Idol was made due to the Divine Powers of Sage Bharatwajar and since it was made of Saligramam and Putru Mann. He is seen as a Stucco Idol and hence no Thirumanjanam is done to Him. The Urchavamoorthy Idols are also seen within the same Moolasthanam and Thirumanjanam are done to the Urchavamoorthies. A small Krishnar and a Sudharshana Chakkaram is also seen in the Moolasthanam. 

Devotees may have to climb a few steps to reach the Moolasthanam of the Presiding Deity of Sri Kothandaramar. A West facing Garudalwar Sannadhi is seen and to the rear of Sri Garudalwar is a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam. It is said that there was a Dwajasthambam during ancient times and that it was destroyed during the Moghul Invasion. The Gopuram of the Presiding Deity has a Thirumann and Srichurnam with a Sangu and Chakkaram and flanking them are two East facing Idols of Garudalwars. Heading towards the Moolasthana Mandapam is an East facing Idol of Sri Thumbikai Alwar on the left and another East facing Idol of Sri Nagarajar on the right. All the Mandapams have a latest tiled flooring. The ceiling of this tiled Mandapam has a beautiful painting of Sri Ramar Pattabishekam in multi colours and they are eye catching to any Devotees viewing it. 

On either side of the Moolasthanam there are two huge coloured Idols of the Dwara Baalakas who seem to stand guard. In the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum the Idol of the Presiding Deity of Sri Kohandaramar is seen majestically in a standing posture and He looks dazzling when seen armed with His Bow and Arrow. See along with Him are the Idols of Goddess Seetha and Sri Lakshmana. It is consipicuous that the Idol of Sri Anjaneya Swamy is not seen here. The reason is Sri Rama came to known that His younger brother Sri Barathan likely to light a pyre and enter and Sri Rama cited this reason to Sage Bharatwajar and wanted to leave for Ayodhya without eating with Sage Bharatwajar. This was flatly refused by Sri Bharatwajar and He asked Sri Rama to send His Dhoodhan Sri Hanuman to Ayodhya.On the instructions of Sri Rama, Sri Hanuman flew to Ayodhya with a message for Sri Bharathan. Sri Hanuman was trifle late in returning to Mudikondan and so Sri Rama and Goddess Seetha began to eat. On returning Sri Hanuman knew this and left the place in disgust and sat on the banks of the Pushkarrani located opposite to the Temple. Then Sri Rama cajoled Sri Hanuman to sit near Him and eat with Him. For this Sri Rama drew a line with His finger on the Banana Leaf which is still seen in all the Banana Leaves till now. The Urchavamoorthy Idols of them are seen along with Sri Anjaneya Swamy. Close to the right Dwara Baalaka Idols are the following Idols of Sri Viswaksenar, Sri Nammalwar, Sri Ramanujar or Sri Udayavar and Sri Kulasekara Alwar who are all South facing.

The Temple has a huge outer peripheral but without any Sub Shrines. Instead there is a North facing Podium or Stage on which Divine functions could be conducted within the Temple premises. To the opposite of the Temple is a West facing Sub Shrine of Sri Anjaneya Swamy. Atop this Gopuram is a coloured Idol of Sri Anjaneya Swamy. There are pillar like paintings within the Sub Shrine and Sri Anjaneya Swamy is seen West facing. To the rear of this Sub Shrine is a huge Temple Tank or Pushkarani which belongs to the Mudikondan Sri Kothandaramar Temple. Sri Rama Navami, Hanumath Jayanthi, Vaikunda Ekadesi are some of the festivals that are celebrated in a grand manner. This Temple is construed as one among the five Pancha Rama Ksethrams.
