Vilamal is a small village located in Thiruvarur District. Actually this Temple is located on the outskirts of Thiruvarur. Vilamal in ancient times was known as Thiruvilamar or Thiruvaragam. Sri Pathanjali Manohar Temple is also known as Sri Pathanjali Manoharar Temple. Unlike other Temples this Temple is not a big one and there is no Rajagopuram. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Pathanjali Manohar and He is an incarnation of God Shiva and faces East. The Presiding Deity is a Self Manifested Swayambu Lingam made out of Sand. He Blesses His Devotees along with His Consorts Goddess Madurabashini Ambal. It is very unique here that when lights are lit in the Sanctum Sanctorum it gets reflected on the Lingam too. The ceiling in some places of the Temple has been painted beautifully and is a treat to watch.

Sages Pathanjali and Vyakarabadhar had previously enjoyed the Dance of Sri Natarajar in Chidambaram and they loved it. These Sages also wanted to see Sri Natarajar's Ajaba and Rudhra Dances and for this they were adviced to visit Vilamal, which they did and loved it. Sage Pathanjali loved this Vilamal since it was full of Shiva Lingams. Fearing that His Feet may touch any of the Shiva Lingams, Sage Pathanjali took the form of a Divine Snake and moved along. Devotees may recollect that King Dasaratha during the Ramayana days had performed Puthira Kameshti Yaagam. This Vilamal Temple is one where he came to Worship before doing the Puthra Kameshti Yaagam. There is no Navagraha Sannadhi in this Temple.

This Temple is considered to be one of the 276 Thevara Paadal Petra Sthalam dedicated to God Shiva and the 90th such Temple located on the Southern Banks of River Kaveri. The Sacred Tank Agni Theertham is located just outside the Temple and the Sthala Virukshams are Vilvam Tree and Kiluvai Maram. Margazhi Thiruvadhurai, Aadi Pooram, Navarathri, Puratasi Ammavasai are celebrated ina grand manner.
