Needamangalam is located in Thiruvarur District. Sri Kokamukeshwarar Temple is also pronounced as Sri Gokamukeshwarar Temple by some. This Temple is believed to more than 1200 years old and was supposed to have been built by the Chola Rulers. It is said that Sri Kokamukeshwarar Temple was one of the favourite Temples of the Great Chola King Raja Raja Cholan and that he used to frequent this Temple as many times as he could to seek the Blessings of Sri Kokamukeshwarar. It is widely believed that Indran took the form of a Stork or Kokku and Prayed to Shiva here and hence the name Sri Kokamukeshwarar to the Presiding Deity.
This Temple does not have any Rajagopuram. There is a small Nandhi Vaahanam closer to the Moolasthanam. At its doorway there is an Idol of Sri Vinayagar. In the Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Kokamukeshwarar is seen in the form of Shiva Lingam and is considered as an incarnation of God Shiva. Sri Kokamukeshwarar Temple has a Shrine for Ambal who is seen in a standing posture and the Ambal is known as Gnanabikai. Apart from the Main Deity the Sub Shrine of Sri Selva Ganapathy attracts a lot of Devotees. There is a general feeling that Sri Selva Ganapathy would Bless His Devotees with adequate Wealth.
Though the Presiding Deity is Sri Kokamukeshwarar there is a steady flow of Devotees to the Sub Shrine of Sri Murugan whose fame is on par with Shiva here. In this Sub Shrine Sri Murugan or Sri Kalyana Murugan is seen flanked by His Consorts Valli and Devsena. It is believed that those who come to Pray Murugan here for eleven Tuesdays continuously would get married soon and all their Marriage related obstacles would be vanished. Hence many Devotees fondly call this Murugan as Sri Kalyana Murugan. It is said that a Yaagam is performed here during Shasti festival and issueless Devotees attending this Yaagam during the Shasti festival would be Blessed with a lovely Kid.
The Temple has a Navagraha Sannadhi on an elevated podium. A Devotees visit to Needamanagalam is said to be completed only after visiting this Temple of Sri Kokamukeshwarar.
