This Temple is located in a congested place in Thirucherai and there is a seven tiered East facing Rajagopuram. Opposite to the seven tiered Rajagopuram is a four pillared Mandapam. There is a huge Pushkarani facing the Rajagopuram but it would be good on the part of the Temple authorities if they could spruce up and get rid of the Temple Tank from its unwanted weeds and plants. On entering the seven tiered Rajagopuram is a Madapalli and an Annadhana Koodam. The Temple office too is located close to this place.
Beneath the second Rajagopuram of 3 tiers is a Kuzhal Oodhum Krishnan and another Infant Krishnan Idol. There is a Bali Peedam, a Dwajasthambam and a Garudalwar Sannadhi facing the Sanctum Sanctorum. Thge entire Moolasthanam is at an elevated place and the Devotees need to climb 6 to 8 steps to get there. On the way is a well decorated Kannadi Arai and there are a pair of colourful Dwara Balagas leading to the Moolasthanam. At the threshold of the Moolasthanam is another black pair of Dwara Balaagas. This is a Vaishnava Perumal Temple dedicated to Sri Saranatha Perumal who is an incarnation of Maha Vishnu. The Temple is around 800 to 1000 years old. Sri Saranathan grants Darshan to all His Devotees in a Standing Posture facing East. The Consort of the Presiding Deity is known here as Sri Saaranayaki. The Temple gains prominence since its one of the rarest Temples where the Presiding Deity has five Consorts. 1) Sri Devi, 2) Bhoo Devi, 3) Mahalakshmi, 4) Saranayaki, and 5) Neeladevi.
The Temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandam and its stands as the 15th Temple from among the 108 Divya Desam. The Thaayar is known here as Sri Saranayaki Thaayar and She occupies a separate South facing Shrine and Her Shrine too has a smaller 3 tiered Rajagopuram. There are Shrines for Sri Rama, Sri Hanuman, Sri Narasimhar, Sri Alwars, Sri Ramanujar, Sri Brahmma, Sri Vishvaksenar and Sri Manavala Maa Munigal. The Sthala Viruksham here is a Shenbagam Tree and the Pushkarani is known as Saara Theertham. The Vimanam is known as Saara Vimanam. This is the only Temple to have an Idol of River Cauvery in the Moolasthanam. It is believed that the soil around this Temple is very rich and fertile due to the presence of this Temple. Thirumangai Alwar has visited this Temple and has heaped Praises about the Temple in his songs. The Car / Chariot Festival during Tamil Chithirai Month draws enormous crowd. After His exile Sri Rama is believed to have come here in His Forest Attire along with Seetha, Lakshmana etc from Sri Lanka on His way to Ayodhya. The Temples Chariot is kept quite at a distance away from the Temple but is safely parked and secured. Thirucherai is also known as Pancha Saara Kshethram.
