Thirusirupuliyur is also known as Sirupuliyur. The Temple is located in Tirusirupuliyur near Kollumangudi in Nannilam Taluk of Thiruvarur District. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Maha Vishnu. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is known as Sri Sthala Sayana Perumal or Sri Arulmaakadal Perumal who is an incarnation of Maha Vishnu. His Consort is known by the name Sri Thirumagal Nachiyar. It is believed that Sage Vyakarapathar who was joined by Sage Pathanajali went to Thirusirupuliyur instead of going to Srirangam. This mistake was due to their poor eye sight. Their Penance here enabled both of them to see Sri Sthala Sayana Perumal here.
The Temple has a five tiered Rajagopuram. There is a Dwajasthambam and a Neivedhya Peedam facing the Moolasthanam. In the Sanctum Sanctorum Sri Sthala Sayana Perumal is seen in a Bala Sayanam which means that He looks smaller in His reclined posture and is seen along with His Thirumangai Nachiyar. An Idols of Vyagabadhar along with Kanva Maharishi is found in the Sanctum Sanctorum along with the Presiding Deity. The Vimanam above the Sanctum Sanctorum is known as Nandha Vardhana Vimanam. The Urchavamoorthy Idol which is taken around on festive occasions is known as Sri Kripa Samudhra Perumal.
It is said that there was a egoistic clash between Garuda and Adhi Seshan. In this Maha Vishnu felt that Garudan was slightly arrogant and aggressive and so He supported Aadhi Seshan and gave Him Asylum to coil Himself beneath His reclined posture as seen in Sanctum Sanctorum. Hence this is a rare Divya Desam Temple where Adhi Seshan is found instead of Garudalwar.
A separate Sub Shrine for Adhi Seshan is seen close to the Pushkarani. The name of the Theertham or Sacred Tank is known as Manasa Pushkarani. Many Issueless Devotees visit this Temple for a Child Boon. This Temple is known as Naaga Dosha Parihaara Sthalam and Kaala Sarpa Dosha Parihaara Sthalam.
