Sri Malyavanta Prasanna Virupakseswara Swamy Temple is a hilltop Temple located in Hampi. It is one of the finest Temples but less known to the outer world. There is a ghat road leading to this Temple and it can be reached by vehicles. This Temple could be reached through the outer peripheral of Sri Malyavanta Raghunath Temple through a small gate.

The actual Temple is located on a rock on top of a hill and Devotees ought to climb through an elevated rock to reach the Temple. This is an East facing Temple and the Presiding Deity is Sree Malyavanta Prasanna Virupaksheswara Swamy who is an in the form of a Shiva Lingam. It is construed that Sri Prasanna Virupaksheswarar is an incarnation of God Shiva. This is a unique Temple where Devotees cannot enter in a normal way. Since it is a Cave Temple made out of a rock Devotees ought to climb a few steps and crawl their way through to have a Darshan of Sree Prasanna Virupakseswara Swamy who is in the form of a Shiva Lingam.

Facing the Shiva Lingam in the Sanctum Sanctorum is a Nandhi Bhagwan and close to this is another Black Shiva Lingam with a Trident placed before it. The entire Shiva Lingam could not be seen since a major portion of it has been sunk to the Earth. This Shiva Lingam has a Naagabharanam which looks resplendent. On top of the Presiding Deity they have placed a vessel through which Divine Water drips atop the Shiva Lingam. It is believed that the Sun Rays from the East falls on the Shiva LIngam / Presiding Deity daily during the Sun Rise. To the rear left of the Shiva Lingam is a Ganapathy Idol and two Idols of Naaga Devathas. To the rear right of the Shiva Lingam is a coloured Image of God Shiva who is seen in a sitting posture. This Temple is very unique the Devotees have to crawl and reach the Sanctum Sanctorum. Even the Purohit who does the Pooja sits and performs the entire rituals since it is a low roofed Cave Temple.

Another important aspect is that this Shiva Lingam gains prominance since it is believed that Sri Rama had installed this Shiva Lingam here to do His Divine rituals during His period in Kishkindha. The place where Sri Lakshmana struck the rock with His Bow for fetching Water could be still seen by the Devotees and Tourists visiting this Temple and around this Divine spot are several Shiva Lingams and Nandhi Bhagawans. There is a steady inflow of Tourists not only from Karnataka but from the places all over India since Hampi has an Historical importance.
