Sri Vijaya Vittala Temple in Hampi is one of the biggest and best known Temples meant for its sprawling campus and craftsmanship. It was built way back in the 15th century during the times of King Devaraya II. It was a Temple to glorify the importance of the Presiding Deity Sri Vijaya Vitthala who is none other than Maha Vishnu. The Temple has a South facing Welcome Arch which is in shambles. There are several multi pillared Mandapams on the way to the Rajagopuram. It is believed that in those days it was used as a Bazaar meant for shopping purposes. Close to one of these Mandapam there is a huge Sacred Tank or Pushkarani which is also in ruins.  It is a must visit Temple in Hampi and comprises of Maha Mandapam or Sabha Mandapam (meant for the congregation of the Devotees), Ranga Mandapam (which contains the musical pillars), Kalyana Mandapam (meant for marriages), Utsava Mandapam (meant for performing festivals etc) and the all important Stone Chariot. This Stone Chariot has been printed in the Rupees 50 denomination of the Indian Currency. This Stone Chariot had been dedicated to Lord Garuda who is supposed to be the Official Vaahanam of Maha Vishnu. Likewise the musical pillars of this Temple resonates different musical notes and it was a wonder even to the Britishers who ruled us. The Temple has a 5 tiered East facing Rajagopuram which is rickety and in ruins and out of these 5 tiers only 3 stand to this date. Similar to this there is a 3 tiered Rajagopuram in the South and another 3 tiered Rajagopuram in the West. A Neivedhya Peedam or a Bali Peedam built in those days still looks strong and close to it there is a Anjaneya Swamy Idol chiselled out of a single stone and kept in a four pillared Mandapam. The Sanctum Sanctorum of Sri Vijaya Vitthala is East facing but without its Presiding Deity which is believed to have been removed to Pandarpur. Likewise the multi pillared Mandapam of the Goddess too is devoid of the Sacred Statue. Several other Sub Shrines of this Temple are in ruins. A dilapidated Palace which is supposed to be the Queens Palace is still visible and in ruins.

Devotees and Tourists who wish to enter the Temple have to purchase a ticket for the battery car which is being run. Apart from this the ASI collects a fee of Rs.40/- from each Devotee who wish to enter the Temple Premises. Wheel Chair facilities are available to the elderly and disabled persons. The Temple Office functions close to the car parking. The Car Parking area could accomodate any number of vehicles with ease. There are several shops on either side of the road leading to this Temple.
