  • Sri Atulya Nadheswarar Temple, Arakandanallur, Viluppuram District, Tamil Nadu

This Temple is located in a place called Aragandanallur in Villupuram District. This Temple is built on a small Hillock and Devotees can drive and reach the Temple since there is a ghat road leading to the Temple. There is a seven tiered Rajagopuram and the entire Temple complex is enclosed using tall rectangular granite walls. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Athulya Natheshwarar who is an incarnation of God Shiva. He Blesses His Devotees along with His Consort Goddess Azhagiya Ponnazhagi. Sri Azhagiya Ponnazhigi Ambal occupies a separate Shrine and She is considered as an incarnation of Goddess Parvathy. This Temple is considered as one of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalam. It is believed that Saint Sammandhar had come to Arakandanallur and had sung in praise of Sri Athulya Nadheshwarar. This Temple in Arakandanallur and Annamalaiyar Temple in Tiruvannamalai are the one two Temples which preserves the Footsteps of the great Saint Sammandhar. There are Sub Shrines for the Naaynmaars, Sri Bhairavar, Sri Annamalaiyar, Sri Saneeswarar, Sapthamathas and Sri Murugan.  It is strange to see Sri Murugan with one Head and six Hands. It is said that the great Saint Ramana Maharishi had stayed in a few Caves around this Temple before leaving for Thiruvannamalai. There is a Sacred Tank or Pushkarani in this Temple called Indra Theertham. This Temple was built by Pallava Kings and we can find three rock cut caves near this Temple. Though this Temple was built by Pallava Kings it was the Chola and Vijayanagara Kings who developed this Temple to it's current structure. Thousands of Devotees from nearby District visit this Temple everyday. Pradhosham, Maha Shivarathiri, Thiru Karthigai, Panguni Uthiram, Arudhra Darishanam are some of the festivals that are celebrated in a grand manner.
