Poovarasankuppam is a very small village and is equidistantly located between Pondy and Villupuram well within Tamil Nadu. It falls in Kandamangalam Taluk in Villupuram District. Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple located in a busy market area and the Temple has a 3 tiered Rajagopuram which is East facing. The Temple is supposed to have been built in the seventh century by King Narasimha Pallavan. It is believed that Sri Narasimha Swamy vanquished and slayed Hiranyakasibhu and even after killing him the anger of Sri Narasimha Perumal did not alleviate. It is said He was found everywhere with uncontrolled anger. On the request of the Sapatha Rishis, Sri Narasimha Swamy gave Darshan to them but the God was so resplendent and raging in anger, that the Saptha Rishis were unable to see Him. They therefore Prayed to Goddess Amirthavalli Thaayar to mitigate the anger of Sri Narasimha Perumal so that they could have a good Darshan of Sri Narasimha Swamy. The entire incident is said to had happened in Poovarasankuppam where a Temple was built for Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Perumal. Hence this Poovarasankuppam Perumal Temple is known as Thennaga Ahobilam or South Ahobilam.
On entering the Temple there is a Neivedhya Peedam or a Bali Peedam, a Metallic Dwajasthambam or a Kodi Maram and a Sri Garudalwar too is seen there facing the Sanctum Sanctorum. In the Moolasthanam Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Perumal is found to be seated on a Silver Throne with His Consort Amirthavalli Thaayar seated on His left lap. It is believed that one eye of Sri Amirthavalli Thaayar looks at Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Perumal whereas with Her left eye She views Her Devotees. The eyes of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Perumal and His Consort Amirthavalli Thaayar are said to be at an equal height here. Due to this factor many believed that there is no gender bias in this Temple and that both are treated on par equally. It is believed that this act of Thaayar Amirthavalli had brought down the flared up temper of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Perumal to a great extent. The Images of the Perumal and the Thaayar have been sculpted out of a black stone and looks so impressive.
The outer peripheral of the Temple has strong pillars everywhere and on these pillars are the Idols of different Gods which has been painted gorgeously. The Thaayar occupies another Sub Shrine where She is East facing. Likewise the Aandal too has a Sub Shrine which is East facing. Between these two Sub Shrines another huge door leading out of the Temple but this has been kept closed permanently. There is a Sub Shrine for Sri Anjaneya Swamy and Sri Krishna or Sri Gopalakrishnan. An Idol of Sri Ramanujar along with a Naga Devatha is found place on an elevated platform. A huge oil lamp known as Anayaa Vilakku has been lit and kept in a glass enclosure. There is a belief in this Temple that Devotees who pour Cow's Ghee and help in lighting the Anayaa Vilakku would get rid of all financial, health and family problems. The Temple has a huge Yaaga Mandapam close to which lies the Vaahana Mandapam and most of the Temple's Vaahanam are safely kept here.
The Temple has a Madapalli or a Kitchen of its own and free Annadhanam is a Hallmark of this Temple for which purpose several steel tables and benches are neatly displayed and kept. Many stories go around this Temple and one such story is that this Poovarasankuppam Sri Lakshmi Narsimha Perumal Temple is so important than the rest as Sri Sooryan occupies a prime position amongst the Navagraham. There is a Temple Pushkarani or a Sacred Tank. Every Swathi Nakshatram day is very important in this Temple. Ratha Sapthami, Vaikunta Ekadesi and Narasimha Jayanthi are celebrated in a grand manner. The only moot point is the Temple lacks adequate vehicular parking since the road opposite to the Temple is busy and narrow. Therefore Devotees are advised to park their vehicles safely in closeby areas so that they could have a peaceful Darshan.
