Melmalayanur or Melmalaiyanur is a village located in Villupuram District. Sri Angala Parameswari Temple is also called by some as Sri Angalamman Temple and it is situated in Melmalaiyanur. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Goddess Angala Parameshwari or Sri Angalamman and She is an incarnation of Goddess Parvathy. It is believed that this Temple was built in those days in the midst of Graveyards. The Temple has a Welcome Arch and Shiva as Sri Rishaba Aroodar, Angala Parameswari, Vinayagar, Murugan and an Anthill are seen as Idols on the Welcome Arch. This is a North facing Temple with a Chariot Mandabam. Apart from this North facing entrance there are two more entrances in the West and South. The actual Presiding Deity of the Temple is Sri Thandeswarar who is none other than Shiva himself in the form of a Shiva Lingam. His Consort is Sri Angala Parameswari or Sri Angalamman who is an incarnation of Goddess Parvathy. She is seen in the Moolasthanam in a sitting posture on an Anthill with 4 hands. A Cradle of the Amman and Her Urchavamurthy Idol too are seen within the Sanctum Sanctorum. Facing Her Moolasthanam is a Neivedhiya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Simha Vaahanam.
There is a Sub Shrine known as Pei Medai. Long ago there lived a Saint known as Mannu Munivar and he did Penance here in favour of Sri Angala Parameswari and attained Moksham here. The place where he died has been closed with a slab and a Samadhi has been built around it. It is the practice of this Temple that Devotees who are inflicted with Evil Spirits are brought and made to sit here and a few Rituals are done to ward away those evil spirits. The outer periphery has a Gulmohar Tree and Naagar Idols and a few Amman Idols are beneath it. Devotees who done have Kids make it a habit to tie a Wooden Cradle on it and there is a belief that they are soon Blessed with a Child. The Temple has Sub Shrines for Sri Gopala Vinayagar, Sri Periyayi Amman and Mayana Kaali who are seen in a lying posture, Sri Annapoorani and Sri Gangai Amman. In recent years many cement Sub Shrines of few more Ammans are added to this Temple.
This Temple is located nearly 32 kilometers away from Gingee. In earlier times King Malayan ruled the area in and around this place and hence it was called as Melmalaiyanur. It is believed that the Presiding Deity of this Temple was created Brahmma, Vishnu, Rudra, Maheswaran and Sadhasivan to ignite the World with all living being in this Earth. In the later years the Vijayanagara Rulers had a big hand in promoting this Temple to a great extent. This Temple is famous for Masana Kollai that is performed during February and March. During this festival many Devotees cook food and burn it on the ground. Wishes are granted to Devotees who perform this kind of offering to Goddess Angala Parameshwari. Thousands of Devotees visit this Temple during New Moon Day. Devotees who Worship Sri Angala Parameshwari Amman as their Kula Deivam come to this Temple and perform the Ear Boring ceremony of their Kids. Likewise Tonsuring is another important Offering to the Goddess here. Some local Devotees cook Pongal, Karuvaadu, Fish and Chicken as a part of their Ritual to show their immense faith on Sri Angalamman.
Devotees who come to this Temple from far off outstations must be aware of Touts and Agents who seem to roam around freely and fleece gullible Devotees for the sake of money promising them an immediate Darshan at the threshold of the Moolasthanam. The Government must consider this fact and curtail such nefarious activities.
