Sri Abrimeshwarar Temple is a few Kilometers away from the GST Road in a place called Thiruvamathur in Villupuram District. It has a seven tiered East facing Rajagopuram and it has been built in a whopping 2 acres or more land. This Temple is supposed to have been built by the earlier Chola Kings. The inscriptions of this Temple refers to King Rajaraja Cholan, King Rajendra Cholan etc which indirectly implies that this Temple would have been built by the earlier Chola Kings than them. Later the Vijayanagara Emperors took over this Temple and promoted it to this level. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Lord Abirameswarar and He is an incarnation of Lord Shiva and He is found as a Shiva Lingam in the Sanctum Sanctorum. On entering the Temple there is a huge and colourful white Nandhi Bhagwan and ahead of it there is a Paadala Nandhi Bhagwan which is sunk much below the ground level. A huge Dwajasthambam and Bali Peedam too is seen. Devotees have to enter a multi pillared mandapam from the South side and on climbing a few steps there a pair of Dwara Baalakas founds as black vigraham and close to them is a Adhikara Nandhi is a human form and a either side of it are Dwara Ganapathy and Murugan. Beyond this multi pillared mandapam there is another pair of coloured Dwara Baalaka Idols. Lord Shiva is called as Sri Abirameshwarar and He is found in the Sanctum Sanctorum as a Shiva Lingam. There are Sub Shrines for Siddhi Vinayagar, Murugan, Natarajar, Lingothbavar, Dhakshinamurthy, Durgai, Pitchadanar, Bhairavar, Chandikeshwarar, Sapthamaathas, Gajalakshmi, Naanmuganar, Sahasra Lingam and Sattanathar in the inner peripheral of the Temple. Close to them is a Palliyarai with a wooden door. In the outer peripheral there are Sub Shrines for 63 Nayanmaras, Lord Rama along with Seetha, Lakshmana, Anjaneya Swamy, Sabari, Mummoorthy, Sivapujai Vinayagar, Valli Devasena Samedha Subramaniyar, Kasi Viswanathar, Jeshta Devi, Valampuri Vinayagar. Several Vaahanams which could be used on festive days are stacked and kept in a 100 pillared mandapam. There are this Temple is considered as one of the 276 Thevara Padal Petra Sthalam. Appar, Sundarar and Sammandhar have all sung in praise of this Temple. Apart from this there is a Navagraha enclosure. The most important feature of this Temple is that there are 8 Shiva Lingams known as Ashta Lingams. It is widely believed that all Marital Discords are settled here if the Devotees come and visit this Temple. The Sthala Viruksham is a Vanni Tree whereas the Sacred Tank or Pushkarani is called as Poompoigai or Dhanda Theertham or Pambai / Kadamba River. Beneath the Sthala Viruksham is a Vanni Vinayagar Idol. The Temple has a three tiered Rajagopuram on the rear side but this has been kept closed for now and it is believed that this door way would be opened on festive occasions when there is an overwhelming number of Devotees visiting here. Masi Shivarathri, Pradosham, Punguni Uthiram, Puratasi Navrathri are celebrated in a grand manner.
The Temple is very unique since unlike other Shiva Temples the Ambal Shrine is not within the Main Temple. The Shrine of His Consort Goddess Muthambigai alias Manonmani Ammai alias Azhagiya Nayagi is situated opposite to the Main Temple. The Shrine of Muthambigai is West facing within a 5 tiered Rajagopuram. There is a short Dwajasthambam for Her along with a Bali Peedam and a Simha Vaahanam. The Ambal Shrine is on an elevated platform and Devotees may have to climb 6 to 7 steps. There are a pair of Dwara Baalakis here and apart from them there are another pair of the Dwara Baalakis on the threshold of the Ambal's Shrine. These Dwara Baalakis are known as Siva Durgai and Vishnu Durgai. At the rear of the Ambal Shrine is Goddess Chandikeshwari in a small Sub Shrine and close to it several Temple Vaahanams are stacked in a multi pillared mandapam. Another important Sub Shrine is that of Goddess Thiruvattapaarai Amman and She draws a lot of Devotees who come here for settlement of their Civil Disputes and Civil Cases. It is believed that Sage Bruhangi who was cursed by Goddess Parvathy sought Her Blessings later in this Temple.
The Temple has a huge Temple Car or a Temple Chariot which is safely enclosed. Both the Temples have very tall and massive compound walls and both the Shrines are covered with CCTV.
