Marakkanam is an important place in Viluppuram District. The full name of the Temple is Sri Girijambal Samedha Sri Boomeshwarar Temple. This is an East facing Temple but it does not have any Rajagopuram. Instead there is an East facing Gopuram in which the Idols of Shivan and Parvathy seated on a Rishaba Vaahanam and flanked by Valli Devasena Samedha Subramaniar and Ganapathy are seen. The Temple has a Neivedhya Peedam, a Dwajasthambam and a Nandhi Vaahanam within a four pillared Mandapam. The Nandhi Vaahanam is placed in such a way that it could see the Moolasthanam through a window comprising of 9 gaping holes. There is another small Nandhi Vaahanam along with two Vinayagar and Naga Devatha Idols.

Devotees can enter the multi pillared Mandapam through a small entrance. There are two Dwara Baalaka Idols who stand guard at the threshold of the Moolasthanam. In the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Bhoomeswarar is in the form of a Shiva Lingam and is considered as an incarnation of God Shiva. Sri Bhoomeshwarar is also called as Sri Bhoomeeshwar Thevar and Sri Bhoomiappa Thambiran. Around the Koshtam of the Moolavar are the following Idols Sri Pichandavar, Sri Dhakshinamoorthy, Sri Maha Vishnu, Sri Brahmma, Sri Durgai Amman and Chandikeshwarar. The Idols of the other Urchavamoorties are seen along with the Idols of Sri Natarajar, Sivagami Ambal and Manikavasagar in a separate Sub Shrine close to the Moolasthanam. The Name of the Ambal in this Temple is Sri Girijambal or Sri Girijambika. She is seen in Her Shrine in a standing posture facing East. There are two East facing Dwara Baalakis before the Shrine of Sri Girijambika. There is a Nandhi Vaahanam instead of a Simha Vaahanam and a Neivedhya Peedam facing Her Shrine.

The Temple has a multi pillared corridor in which the Naalvar Sannadhi is North facing. Along with the Naalvar there is an Idol of Viral Meenda Naayanar who is believed to cut off the fingers of those who speak ill of God. Likewise there are North facing Idols of Pillayar, Anjaneyar, Kaala Bhairavar, three to four Vinayagar Idols, Valli Devasena Samedha Subramaniyar and six more Idols of the Sapthamathas from among the seven. The Idol of Indrani is missing in the Sapthamathas. The outer peripheral also has an Idol of Vinayagar. Next to this is the Sub Shrine of Sri Arumugham who is seen along with Valli and Devasena. There are two Dwara Baalaka Idols who stand guard. Apart from these there are East facing Shiva Lingams. Close to this is a Navagraha Sannadhi. Beyond it is a West facing Kaala Bhairavar Idol which is rather unusual. The Temple has a West facing Palliayari. There is also a West facing Sub Shrine in which the Idols of Sri Suryan and Sri Chandran are found together.

The Sthala Viruksham of the Temple is Vanni Maram and the Pushkarani or Sacred Tank is known as Brahmma Theertham. The Temple has a Temple Kitchen or Madapalli. It is believed that those who wish to Buy or Build a new house come here and offer Prayers so that they are Blessed in all aspects after the purchase is done. This Temple is believed to be more than 1000 years old. The Chola Rulers evinced keen interest since they had built this Temple. The inscriptions citing the Names of Raja Raja Cholan, Rajendra Cholan and Kulothunga Cholan proves this. Later the Vijayanagara Rulers developed this Temple. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
