Sri Abathsagayeshwarar Temple is also known as Guru Sthalam and it is situated in Alangudi which is near Kumbakonam. Though the Temple is located close to the Temple Town of Kumbakonam it is actually located in Alangudi which falls under Thiruvarur District. There is a West facing Welcome Arch which leads from the main road to the inner road where the Temple is located. In this Welcome Arch Sri Dhakshinamoorthy or Sri Guru Bhagwan is seen centrally seated and He is flanked by two West facing coloured Idols of Sri Ganapathy and Sri Murugan. At the end of the Arch are two white Nandhi Bhagwan Idols. 

There are rows of shops on either side of the small road leading to the Temple selling all types of Divine Items like Fruits, Flowers, Garlands, Pooja Items etc. There are dual entrances to the Temple from the South facing and East facing. Both these entrances have five tiered Rajagopuram. The South facing Rajagopuram and entrance is more popular with the Devotees since it would lead them directly to the Shrine of Sri Dhakshinamoorthy alias Sri Guru Bhagwan. Devotees can also enter the Temple through the five tiered Rajagopuram. The actual Presiding Deity of this Temple is an East facing Sri Abathsagayeeswarar whereas in this Temple Sri Dhakshinamoorthy who is South facing is more popular among the Devotees. 

Just beneath the five tiered South facing Rajagopuram is an idol of Sri Ganapathy who is known here as Sri Kalangaamar Kaatha Vinayagar who has to be Prayed first ahead of all others. Devotees entering through the East facing five tiered Rajagopuram can see and East facing Idol of Sri Kodimarathu Vinayagar. Then is a tall Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a West facing Nandhi Vaahanam looking towards the East facing Presiding Deity of Sri Abatsagaya Easwarar. Devotees may have to climb few steps to reach the level of the multi pillared Moolasthana Mandapam. Each of these pillars are intricately carved and is eyecatching to the Devotees. The threshold of the Moolasthanam has two East facing black Dwara Baalaka Idols standing guard on either side. To the left Dwara Baalaka Idol is a small East facing Idol of Sri Ganapathy. In the Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Abathsagayeeswarar is seen East facing and in the form of a Shiva Lingam. He looks resplendent when seen along with His Naagabharanam to the eyes of His Devotees. He looks dazzling when seen amidst the naturally lit oil lamps. Within the same East facing Moolasthanam the Urchavamoorthy Idol of the Guru Bhagwan Sri Dhakshinamoorthy is also seen.

The first Idol in the Koshtam is that of Sri Narthana Vinayagar and followed by the Idols of Sri Dhakshinamoorthy, Sri Annamalaiyar or Sri Lingothbhavar, Sri Brahmma, Sri Durgai and Sri Chandikeshwarar. Though the South facing Shrine of Sri Dhakshinamoorthy is in the Koshtam of the Moolavar Sannadhi it is construed as an important Shrine and could be accessed directly through the South facing Rajagopuram. The Temple has erected steel railings for the Devotees to reach the South facing Shrine of the much sought after Sri Dhakshinamoorthy whose Shrine top is gold plated and looks eye appealing to the Devotees viewing it even from some distance. In this all important South facing Shrine of Sri Dhakshinmaoorthy or Sri Guru Bhagwan, He is seen in a seated posture facing South and there is a steady stream of Devotees willing to Bow and Pray to Him all through the time when the Temple is open. The silver plating threshold accentuates Sri Guru Bhagwan. 

The Temples inner peripheral has the four North facing Idols of Sri Naalvar comprising of Sri Thirugnana Sammandhar, Sri Thirunavukkarasar, Sri Sundarar and Sri Manikavasagar. Next to them few Shiva Lingams are kept in a row and they are those of Sri Suryeshwarar, Sri Someshwarar, Sri Gurumoshseshwarar, Sri Somavathaswamy, Sri Saptharishinathar, Sri Vishnunathar and Sri Virumeshwarar. Next to these Shiva Lingams are the North facing Idols of Sri Agasthiyar, Sri Kasi Visalakshi Samedha Sri Kasi Viswanathar. The inner peripheral of the Temple has an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Aghnya Ganapathy in which He could be seen. Next to this is an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Somaskandar. Then there are two Sub Shrines meant for the Urchavamoorthy Idols of the Temple and these two Sub Shrines are also East facing. Next to this is an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Subramaniyar who is seen flanked by His Consorts Valli and Devasena. Next comes another East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Gajalakshmi. 

The Temple has a well designed square Navagraha Sannadhi. Close to this is the South facing Sub Shrine of Sri Natarajar who is seen along with Sri Sivagami Ambal and Sri Manikavasagar. Then the Urchavamoorthy of Sri Dhakshinamoorthy could be seen in another South facing Sub Shrine which can be reached by a few steps. Close to this Urchavamoorthy Sub Shrine of Sri Dhakshinamoorthy are two West facing Idols of Sri Bhairavar, Sri Chandra Bhagwan and Sri Surya Bhagwan. The Temple has a South facing Sub Shrine of Sri Sukravara Amman who is seen in a standing posture. Close to this is the Consort of this Temple known as Sri Elavarkuzhali Ambal. The threshold of Sri Elavarkuzhali Ambal's Shrine has two Idols of South facing Dwara Baalakis who are seen guarding Her Shrine. Sri Elavarkuzhali Ambal is seen in a South facing standing posture in a Abhaya Hastha posture. The Koshtam of Sri Elavarkuzhali Ambal's Sannadhi has a West facing Sub Shrine of Sri Chandikeshwari. Close to this Sannadhi is a South facing Palliyarai of the Temple. The Temple has a West facing Idol of Sri Saneeswara Bhagwan in His Sub Shrine. 

The Alankara Mandapam of this Temple is seen near the Dwajasthambam and it is South facing. The Temple also has a modern Spiritual Library and a Book Stall selling all Divine and Spiritual Books. The Temple's Office is also located within the Temple. Close to the Temple's Office is a West facing Yaaga Saalai. Opposite to this is an East facing Mandapam which could easily accomodate several hundreds of Devotees. The Gopuram of this Mandapam has coloured Idols of Sri Natarajar, Sri Sivagami Ambal, Sri Pathanjali Munivar and Sri Vyakarabathar. The Temple has its Pushkarani located outside and is known as Amirtha Pushkarani and the Sthala Viruksham is known as Poolai Maram. At the end of the street the Temple's Chariot is safely kept in an enclosure and a small Mandapam is there with a flight of steps and the Temple's Chariot could be decorated through this on festive occasions. Pradosham, Thiruvadhirai, Panguni Uthiram, Vinayagar Chathurthi, Shasti, Guru Peyarchi are some of the festivals that are celebrated in a grand manner. This Temple is a well known Guru Parihaara Sthalam and several Devotees from all over visit this Temple to offer Prayers before Sri Dhakshinamoorthy and the Presiding Deity of Sri Abathsagayeeswarar.
