The full name of the Temple is Sri Maragathambika Samedha Sri Valeeswara Swamy Temple and it is located in a village called Ramagiri in Pichatoor Mandal of Chittoor District. It is located in a hilly terrain of Ramagiri in Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh. Initially there is a coloured Welcome Arch leading Devotees from the Main Road to the Temple. At the foot hill there is a Pushkarani or a Sacred Tank. This Pushkarani gains significance since it has a Nandhi Idol and Water flows continously from the mouth of the Nandheeswarar. Devotees consider this water as a Punniya Theertham and sprinkle it on their head. Close to this is a Shivan Sannadhi which is located in a multi pillared Mandapam. This Sannadhi looks dark and gloomy with nothing visible within it. The Gopuram of this Sivan Sannadhi is dilapidated and looks brittle. There is a Shiva Lingam outside this Sannadhi and this is mounted on a square podium known as Avudai. Before the Gopuram there are two elevated podiums on either side and on top of these two podiums are two West facing Simha Vaahanam Idols. There is a West facing Gopuram and there are rows of Shiva Lingam Idols flanking on either side. At the centre of the Gopuram Sri Anjaneya Swamy is found with a Shiva Lingam. To the left of this Gopuram there is a West facing Vinayagar Sub Shrine built on a four pillared Mandapam. Devotees may have to climb a few steps and enter the Temple through a South facing four pillared Mandapam. There are two Dwara Baalagas on either side as Devotees enter the Kaala Bhairavar Shrine. Close to the Dwara Baalagas is a Vinayagar Idol and a Shiva Lingam. Facing the Kaala Bhairavar Sannadhi is an Idol of a Bhairavar who happens to be the official Vaahanam of Sri Kaala Bhairavar. In the Sanctum Sanctorum Sri Kala Bhairavar is seen in a standing posture and South facing. It is the custom of this Temple to visit the Shrine of Kaala Bhairavar first before visiting the Valeeswarar Shrine or Maragathambika's Shrine. Around the Kostham of Sri Kaala Bhairavar are the Idols of Pancha Bhairavars. Close to the Valeeswarar's Shrine is an Idol of the six faced Shanmugar and Anjaneyar. Close to the threshold of Sri Vaaleeswarar Shrine are two Idols of Chandramouleeswarar and Dwara Vinayagar. Devotees may have to enter the Moolasthanam though a South facing entrance but the Presiding Deity of Valeeswarar is East facing and in the form of a Shiva Lingam which could be seen slightly tilted. Facing the Presiding Deity is an Idol of Nandhi Bhagwan, a Neivedhya Peedam and a West facing Idol of Anjaneya Swamy. There is another Nandhi Bhagwan located further away and He is seen facing the Moolasthanam through a small hole. Around the Koshtam of Sri Valeeswarar are the Idols of Ganapathy, Dhakshinamoorthy, Lingothbhavar, Brahmma, Durgai and Chandikeshwar. In the inner peripheral of Sri Valeeswarar's Shrine is a South facing Veerabadrar Sannadhi, West facing Surya Bhagwan and North facing Sapthamathas. The Consort here is known as Sri Marakathambiga whose Shrine is West facing in a multi pillared Mandapam and She is seen in a standing posture. Pradhosham is not celebrated here and this is unique. The Sacred Tank or the Pushkarani is known as Nandhi Theertham.
This Temple has a long tale and on reading it Devotees could form an idea as to how this Temple was built in Ramagiri. It is said that after the pitched battle in Sri Lanka with Ravana, Lord Rama vanquished the entire Army of Ravana to get back Seetha. Hence Rama wished to perform a Brahmmahathi Nivarthi Pooja and wanted Hanuman to fetch a Shiva Lingam from Kasi. On His orders Hanuman flew to Kasi and was returning to Rameswaram with the Shiva Lingam. While flying on top of Ramagiri Hanuman felt thirsty due to scorching Sun and windy conditions prevailing at that time. Hence Hanuman came down to Ramagiri holding the Shiva Lingam. That time Kaala Bhairavar who disguised Himself as a cowherd was attracted by the Shiva Lingam that hanuman was holding. Wanting to quench His thirst Hanuman requested the cowherd (Kaala Bhairavar) to hold the Shiva Lingam till such time he drank the water. Agreeing to this the cowherd held on to the Shiva Lingam, but as soon as Hanuman disappeared to drink the water the cowherd placed the Shiva Lingam on the ground. Hanuman grew furious on His return to see the Shiva Lingam firmly planted to the ground. Despite repeated attempts Hanuman could never move the Shiva Lingam which did not budge even a little. Thereafter Hanuman tied the Shiva Lingam to His tail to uproot it from the place but all His attempts were futile. Even today the Shiva Lingam in Ramagiri is seen tilited due to this. Then Hanuman in His fit of anger threw the soil around the Shiva Lingam in the viscinity of Ramagiri which still stands as a hillock. After this Hanuman realised that the cowherd was God Kaala Bhairavar. Hanuman later flew back to Kasi, found out another Shiva lingam and this time He made sure that He flew to Rameswaram non stop so that Lord Rama could perform the Brahmmahathi Nivarthi Pooja in Rameswaram. Sri Valeeswara Swamy Temple is also called as Kalabhairavar Temple or Kala Bhairava Kshethram since Sri Kaala Bhairavar is given utmost importance on par with the Presiding Deity of Sri Valeeswara Swamy. Lighting a Poosani Lamp or white Pumpkin Lamp before the Bhairavar is considered as auspicious. It is also believed that Devotees who light 8 Lamps and come to this Temple for 8 Weeks and Circumambulate the Temple premises 8 times would be Blessed with Health, Wealth and Prosperity for their entire life.
While the Valeeswarar and the Kaala Bhairavar Temple are at the foot hill the Murugan Temple is on the hill top. There are few hundred steps to reach he Temple. Elders and Sick may find it tough to reach the Temple top as there is no motorable ghat road leading to the Shrine of the Murugan. This is a West facing Temple and they have planted a Steel Spear a few meters away from the Temple. The Temple does not have any Gopuram and Sri Murugan is found in the Sanctum Sanctorum in a West facing standing posture. The steps leading to this Temple is full of faecal matters and Devotees ought to be very watchful while climbing. THIS MURUGAN TEMPLE IS KEPT OPEN FROM 6 AM TO 8 AM ONLY. Hence outstation Devotees could hardly visit this Temple before its closure at 8 AM. The Temple has to display the Murugan Temple timing at vantage points so that Devotees need not exhausted themselves by climbing all the steps after 8 AM.
The Temple levies a small fee for each Devotee entering this Temple and for the Vehicles parked here.
