Sree Mukhalingeshwara Temple or Madhukeswara Temple is located in a small village called Mukhalingam close to Srikakulam. Mukhalingam was once the capital of the earlier Kalinga Kingdom for over 600 years and is located on the left bank of River Vamsadhara. Two other similar Temples of the same village, Someshwara and Bheemeshwara Temples have gone to ruins and have been taken over by the Archaeological Survey of India. The Main Lingam is not of a stone but appeared as a Face (Mukham) from a wood when a Tree was cut. The Shiva Lingams do not have Facial Carvings on it like other Shiva Temples. Next to the Sanctum Sanctorum is a separate Shrine in which Lord Srinivasa Perumal is adored and Prayed. There is a huge Golem or a Mud Pot behind the Presiding Deity which is as huge or even bigger than the Main Diety itself. There are two gateways and rock cut Lion Statues are found on either side of it. It is said that the construction of this Temple continued for two full generations. On the day of Maha Shivaraathri lakhs of Devotees come to this place and have a Holy Bath in the Vamsadhara River and get rid of all their Sins. This Bathing is known as Chakratheertha Snanam. There are Sub Shrines for Lord Ganesha and Lord Murugan. A paid Car parking with ample space is available just before the Temple premises.
