Sri Nageswara Swamy Temple is situated in the Temple Town of Kumbakonam, It is a East facing Temple with a huge 5 tiered Rajagopuram. This Temple is considered to be built in the 9th century by King Adithya Cholan I. In the Rajagopuram a Vanni Marathu Vinayagr has been embedded and Prayed. In the early 1920s this Temple was almost crumbling and in a dilapidated condition. Then a Shiva Devotee Padagacheri Ramalinga Swamigal evinced keen interest in this Temple and tied a Hundi or a Pot around his neck and collected funds to revive this Temple. Now they have built a Sub Shrine for him just to honour him in a small way. Sri Nageswarar is the Presiding Diety and He is East facing and in the form of a Shiva Lingam. He is also called as Nageswara Swamy, Sree Paathala Beeja Nathar, Sree Madanthai Pahar and Sree Vilwa Nesar. Much before the Sanctum Sanctorum there is a Pillayar and a Murugan Vigrahams placed on either side. At the threshold of the Moolavar Sannadhi are a huge pair of colourful Dwara Balakaas. A Sub Shrine for the famous Padavetti Mariamman is found close to the Moolasthanam. There is a Raahu and Kethu Idols, a Navagraha Sannadhi, Gangai Konda Vinayagar and a Naalwar Sannadhi close to the Moolavar Sannadhi. This Temple is one among the 276 Thevara Paadal Petra Sthalam and the 27th Siva Sthalam to have been built on the Southern Bank of River Kaveri in Chola Naadu. The Ambal Shrine is South facing and She is known here as Brahannayagi or Periya Nayagi. There are two Dwara Baalakis Idols just near the Gateway of the Amman’s Shrine. A Sub Shrine for Chandikeshwari is also seen here. Close to this is a Sub Shrine for Saptha Maathas and another for Aadi Poora Amman. There is a Palli Arai and all the Temple’s Vaahanams are stacked in a multi pillared Mandabam there. There is a Natarajar Shrine which resembles as though the entire Shrine is being drawn by Horses and Elephants. The outer peripheral has a Valampuri Vinayagar, Pralaya Kaala Rudhrar, Dhakshnamurthy, Subramaniyar, Aathmalingam, Mahalingam, Ayyanar, Gajalakshmi, Saraswathy, Arthanariswarar, Brahmma, Durgai, Sri Bhagavar, Thaiyyal Nayagi Samedha Vaitheeswarar, Bhairavar, Uchishta Ganapathy, Suryan, Chandran, Somaskandar and many other Lingams. There is a small Sub Shrine for Dharmasamvardhini Samedha Pancha Nadheswarar. There is a Jura Vinayagar Sub Shrine and Kids get cured when they suffer from Viral Fever etc. On selected days of a month the Sun Rays fall on the Shiva Lingam of the Moolasthanam. This Temple is also an important Temple to participate in the Mahaamaha Theerthavari. The Temple has a madapalli and the Temple Office too functions from within the Temple premises. The Sthala Viruksham or the Sacred Tree is a Vilva Tree and the Pushkarani or Sacred Tank is the Maamanga Kulam. Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner. This is a Naga Dhosha Parihaara Sthalam.
