Sri Someswara Swamy Temple is situated in Kumbakonam Town very close to Sarangapani Temple. This Temple has a East facing 5 tiered Rajagopuram. On entering there is a small Sub Shrine of Ganapathy which faces the Rajagopuram. Beyond it is a Bali Peedam, a Dwajasthambam and a Nandhi Vaahanam which is placed in a four pillared Mandapam and this Nandhi Vaahanam faces the Sanctum Sanctorum. To the right of this place is a Temple Garden or a Nandhavanam. Further away there is another Rajagopuram which is also East facing and this Rajagopuram comprises of 3 tiers. There are two pairs of Dwara Baalakas at two different thresholds leading to the Moolasthanam and close to this are two Pillayars namely Anugraha Vinayagar and Valampuri Vinayagar. Midway there are two Sub Shrines in which Natarajar and Somaskandar could be seen. Close to this is an Ivar Sannadhi in which Sekkizhar too is seen along with Appar, Sundarar, Manikavasagar and Thirugnana Sammandhar. In the Sanctum Sanctorum Sri Someshwara Swamy is seen in the form a Shiva Lingam and He is revered as an incarnation of Shiva. Someshwarar is also known as Sri Kayarkonar, Sri Viyazha Somesar and Sri Sikkesar. Around the Koshtam there are Idols of Niruthi Ganapathy, Dhakshinamoorthy, Arthanareeswarar, Brahmma, Vishnu Durgai and Chandikeshwarar. His Consort in this Temple is Goddess Somasundari Ambal and She also bears the name of Thenaar Mozhiammai. She is South facing and in a standing posture. Instead of the usual 2 Idols there are Images of two Dwara Baalakis drawn on the wall just before Soma Sundari Ambal Sannadhi. Near the Ambal Sannadhi of Goddess Soma Sundari there is an Idol of Thirugnana Sammadhar. There are Sub Shrines for Choleeswarar, Valli Devasena Samedha Subramaniyar, Pillayar, Thirupura Sundari and Vinayagar. There is a Navagraha Sannadhi with a Bhairavar, Suryan and Saneeswaran in a standing posture closeby. The Temple has a Temple Kitchen or Madapalli. Despite being a Saivaite Temple is a huge Image of Lord Hanuman has been drawn and preserved here. On the way out there is a Shrine for Mangalambigai and Maleeswarar who is found in the form of a Shiva Lingam. Inside the Maleeswarar Shrine is a Kalyana Vinayagar. Those desirous of getting married Pray to this Kalyana Vinayagar for 11 weeks and this is said to fetch results for such Devotees. Maha Shivarathiri, Pradosham, Thiru Karthigai, Aarudhra Dharisanam are some of the festivals celebrated here in a grand manner. This is one among the 276 Thevara Paadal Petra Sthalam and the 28th Siva Sthalam built on the Southern Bank of River Cauvery in Chola Naadu.
