Sri Sarangapani Temple is located in the Temple Town of Kumbakonam. It was built between Rivers Cauvery and Arasalaru. The early Nayak Rulers built the 173 feet main Temple in the 15th century. Later the Cholas, Pallavas and the Vijayanagara Rulers evinced keen interest in this Temple and promoted it to this level. The Temple Rajagopuram is made up of 11 tiers and it is East facing. The Presiding Deity in the Sanctum Sanctorum is Sri Sarangapani and He is also known as Aravamudhan and is an incarnation of Maha Vishnu. In the Sanctum Sanctorum Sarangapani is seen in a reclining posture as though He intends in getting up. Usually in such Temples the Deity would be seen holding a Discuss and a Conch but not so in this Temple. Here the Swamy is seen holding a Saarangam or a Bow in His hand and hence the name Sarangapani. His Consort is Komalavalli Thaayar who is also known as Padi Thaanda Pathini. This Temple is considered to be very Sacred by the Vaishnavites and it is also one of the biggest Vishnu Temples of Kumbakonam. There is a huge multi pillared mandapam and each of these pillars are embedded with different sculptures of Gods, Goddesses, Yaazhis etc. There are Sub Shrines for Alwars and Desigar. There are four huge black pillars to the rear of which there is a Sub Shrine for Ramar. Here Rama, Seetha, Lakshmana and Anjaneya are seen together in a standing posture and they are South facing. There are two ways to enter the Sanctum Sanctorum. The Uthrayana entrance is opened for 6 months and then for the next 6 months the Dakshnayana entrance is kept open. Chandan and Prachandan are found as the two Dwara Baalagas at the threshold of the Moolavar Sannadhi and facing the Moolasthanam is a Garudalwar. The Main Shrine resembles as though the Sanctum Sanctorum itself is mounted on an elephant driven Chariot. Around the Koshtam of the Moolavar Idols for the following are seen: Avathara Narasimhar, Yuddha Narasimhar, Vadha Narasimhar, Yoga Narasimhar, Vamana Avadharam, Vaikundanathar, Gajendra Moksham, Venugopalan. A Vishnu Paadham is seen close to the Moolasthanam. Komalavalli Thaayar is seen in Her Shrine and facing Her is a Dwajasthambam and a Bali Peedam. Close to the Thaayar Sannadhi the Idols of Desigar and Andal are seen. Around the Koshtam of the Thaayar Sannadhi there are Idols for two Lakshmi and a Krishnar. There are Sub Shrines for Padhala Srinivasa Perumal and Mettu Srinivasa Perumal. The Temple has a Nandhavanam or a Temple Garden. There is a Madapalli or a Temple Kitchen. All the Temple Chariots are safely preserved. The Temple’s Viman is one of the tallest and is called as Vaitheega Vimanam. The Sacred Tank is known as Hemavalli Pushkarani or Potramarai Kulam.  This Temple is considered as one among the five Pancha Ranga Kshethrams. The other four being 1) Sundararaja Perumal Temple, Salem, 2) Oppiliappan Temple, 3) Nachiyar Temple and 4) Thirumala Tirupathi Venkatachalapathy Temple.
