Koranattu Karuppur is a place located very close to Kumbakonam. The full name of the Temple is Sri Abirami Ambika Samedha Sri Sundareswara Swamy Temple. Some refer this Temple as Sri Sundara Mahakali Amman Temple or Sri Petti Kali Amman Temple. The Chola Rulers called this place as Karambhai Naadu. The ancient name of Koranattu Karuppur is Thirupadalavanam. With passage of time Karambhai Naadu was called as Koranaadu or Koranattu Karuppur. It is believed that all the Devas came here to Worship God Shivan and Goddess Parvathy. That time Shivan revealed Himself as a handsome youth and hence was called as Sri Sundareswarar. At the outset there is a North facing Welcome Arch leading to the Temple from the main road. Sri Sundara Mahakali Amman or Sri Petti Kali Amman is centrally seated in the Welcome Arch while there are other Divine Idols too.

This Temple has a five tiered East facing Rajagopuram which is wider than usual as seen in other Temples. There are several coloured Idols seen in the Rajagopuram which makes it eye appealing. Devotees may have to climb down 3 or 4 steps to reach the level of the Temple premises. Beneath the Rajagopuram there is a North facing Idol of Sri Vinayagar and a South facing Idol of Sri Murugan. The inner side of the Rajagopuram has two West facing Idols of Sri Sanganidhi and Sri Padumanidhi who seem to look towards the Moolasthanam. The first Sub Shrine is that of Sri Kodimarathu Vinayagar who is East facing and next to Him is a tall Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram. Beyond it is a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a West facing Nandhi Vaahanam. There is yet another smaller Neivedhya Peedam after the Nandhi Vaahanam. There is a multi pillared Mandapam which has contrast colours painted. To the left is an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Ayyappan or Sri Dharma Sastha.

There are two East facing Dwara Baalakas Idols standing guard and close to the left Dwara Baalaka Idol are two East facing Idols of Sri Vinayagar and Sri Anjaneya Swamy. Close to them are the two Idols of Sri Adhikaara Nandhi and Sri Suyaprakasambigai who are North facing. The Moolasthana Mandapam has several multiple pillars and the granite flooring lends a credence to it. There is a small West facing Nandhi Vaahanam and a small Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam. At the threshold of the Moolasthanam are two Dwara Baalakas who stand guard on either side of it and they are known as Thindi and Mundi. Close to the Idol of Sri Mundi is a small East facing Idol of Sri Vinayagar. In the Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Sundareshwarar is seen East facing and in the form of a Shiva Lingam. He looks resplendent and dazzling to the eyes of His Devotees when seen in the background of the naturally lit oil lamps. There is a West facing Idol of Sri Suryan which seem to look towards the Moolasthanam. Coming away from the Moolavar Sannadhi is a West facing Sub Shrine of Sri Vinayagar. Facing this Sub Shrine is a Nandhi Vaahanam and to the left of this Shrine is seen an East facing Idol of Sri Vinayagar. It is noteworthy to mention here that all the pillars of this Shrine do have the Yaali Idols embossed on them.

While heading towards the Moolasthanam there is an East facing Shrine of Sri Sundara Mahakali Amman or Sri Petti Kali Amman. There are two huge coloured Dwara Baalaki Idols who are East facing and in a standing posture guarding Her Moolasthanam and these Dwara Baalakis are found along with two Lions. Within the East facing Moolasthanam is a Silver Box within which the Idol of Sri Petti Kali Amman or Sri Sundara Maha Kali Amman is safely kept. On either side of the Petti or Box are two more small coloured Dwara Baalaki Idols who are East facing and who stand guard here. Several centuries ago a huge wooden box was washed away in floods and came floating to this place through River Cauvery. The locals then grew anxious and gathered around the woooden box and opened it with curiousity. On opening it they found a wooden Moorthy whose upper part was Goddess Kaali. From then on this Kali was Prayed with reverence She had 8 Arms and looked charming and hence She was refered as Sri Sundara Maha Kaali or Sri Petti Kali Amman. She is taken out of the box and goes out on a procession once a year during the Uthirayanam period. Devotees can see Her and Pray to Her on Tuesdays (3 PM to 4.30 PM), Fridays (10.30 AM to 12 Noon) and Sundays (4.30 PM to 6 PM) during the Raahu Kaala Time. Next is another East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Gajalakshmi. Facing Her Sub Shrine is a Simha Vaahanam. Between the Moolasthanam and the Idol of Sri Chandikeshwarar is an East facing Shrine of Sri Vaidhyanatha Swamy who is seen in the form of a Shiva Lingam and He is supposed to have remedial powers to cure any ailments of His Devotees. The huge Kuberan who is believed to be around 20 feet had landed here in a Mammoth Elephant on the Banks of the Brahmma Theertham. To portray it Devotees can still find an Idol of Sri Kuberan saddled on an Elephant back on the steps leading to the Brahmma Theertham. Close to this Pushkarani is a West facing Sub Shrine of Sri Raja Ganapathy. The Temple's Chariot is safely secured outside the Temple premises.
