Suryanar Kovil is very close to Thiruvidaimaruthur and Thiruvidaimaruthur is located close to Kumbakonam Town. The Presiding Deity0f this Temple is the Sun God or Sri Surya Bhagwan. He is seen here with His two Consorts Sri Usha and Sri Chaaya. It is West facing with a five tiered Rajagopuram. The  Presiding Deity is in a Chariot like Vimanam. The Idol of Sri Surya Bhagwan is in a standing Posture with His two Consorts.This Temple has stood the test of time and stands majestically. There are only two Temples in the whole of India which are dedicated to the Sun God. One is Konark and the other one is Suryanar Kovil. The difference between them is that Idol Worship is followed in Suryanar Kovil while it is not so in Konark Temple, Odisha. The Temple has separate Shrines for all the other Planetary Deities.

King Kulothunga Cholan I had built this Temple between 1060 AD to 1118 AD. The Temple is built in  a typical Tamil Style. The Vijayanagara Kings had a big hand in renovating the earlier structures of the Temple.  Surya Jayanthi or Ratha Sapthami is celebrated here in a grand manner.  This Temple is one of the nine Navagraha Temples or Navagraha Sthalam very popular in Tamil Nadu. It is generally believed that anyone taking bath in the Temple Tank viz Surya Pushkarani would be soon cured off all their ailments.
