Nathan Kovil is a small village located on the outskirts of Kumbakonam. Sri Jagannatha Perumal Temple or Sri Nandipura Vinnagara Temple is located in Nathan Koil. This Temple is highly praised in Naalayira Divya Prabhandham and is one of the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Sri Maha Vishnu. This Temple is a few metres away from the main road and has a West facing five tiered Rajagopuram. Then there is a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam, a tall Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram and an East facing Sannadhi of Sri Garudalwar which looks towards the Moolasthanam.
Devotees may have to climb a few steps to reach the level of the Moolasthana Mandapam. On either side of the steps there are two Idols of Sanga Nidhi and Paduma Nidhi which are embossed on the walls. Close to the Idol of Sri Sanga Nidhi is a South facing Idol of Sri Krishnar. Standing guard on either side of the Moolasthanam are two huge Dwara Baalaka Idols who are also West facing and they are known as Sri Jayan and Sri Vijayan. The threshold of the Moolasthanam looks dazzling in the backdrop of its gold plating. The Images of the Ashtalakshmi along with Sri Gajalakshmi are embossed on this gold plating. In the Sanctum Sanctorum the West facing Presiding Deity of Sri Srinivasa Perumal is seen flanked His Consorts Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi and they three are seen in a sitting posture. Though the Presiding Deity is Sri Srinivasa Perumal the Temple is called in the name of the Urchavamoorthy who is Sri Jagannatha Perumal and He too is seen flanked by His Consorts Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi. The Urchavamoorthy Idol of Sri Jagannatha Perumal is also known as Sri Vinnagara Perumal or Sri Nandhinathar.
The other noteworthy point to mention here is that the Adhikaara Nandhi is seen here within the Moolasthanam which is quite unusual. Generally Adhikaara Nandhi is connected to Shiva Temples but here Adhikaara Nandhi had come to see Sri Jagannatha Perumal but had inadvertently entered directly even though He was stopped by the two Dwara Baalakas as a result of which a burning sensation was felt by Him. He immediately rushed to God Shiva for a remedial measure. God Shiva told that He should go back to Sri Jagannatha Perumal for seeking remedy to this. Hence the Adhikaara Nandhi came to the Pushkarani of this Temple and had a Holy Snanam and then sought the Blessings of Perumal. The Presiding Deity forgave Him and asked Him to remain along with Him in the Moolasthanam along with Sri Brahmma.
Close to the Moolasthanam is a Sub Shrine which is North facing and Sri Andal Nachiyar is seen standing North facing. Close to the Andal Sub Shrine is a North facing Thirupalliyarai. Close to the Moolasthana Mandapam are the East facing Idols of Sri Jayaveera Anjaneyar and Sri Kundhavai Nachiyar. There is a Sub Shrine in which the Idol of Raja Sri Nandhi Varman is seen at the centre. He was a Pallava King and had a big hand in building this Temple. Flanking him are the Idols of Rani Reva Devi and Rani Kambojavalli who is said to hail from Kambodia. All three of these Idols are East facing and in a standing posture. There is also another East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Vinaya Anjaneyar who is seen in a standing posture with folded hands. Close to this are the Idols of Sri Manavala Maamunigal, Sri Ramanujar or Sri Udayavar, Sri Aaalavandhar, Sri Thirumangai Alwar, Sri Thiruppan Alwar, Sri Thondaradipodi Alwar, Sri Periyalwar, Sri Kulasekara Alwar, Sri Madurakavi Alwar, Sri Nammalwar, Sri Thirumazhisai Alwar, Sri Peialwar, Sri Boothath Alwar, Sri Poigai Alwar and Sri Sri Viswaksenar who are all seen South facing. All these Idols are situated in a Mandapam known as Gayathri Mandapam.
The peripheral of the Temple has a separate Shrine for the Consort of this Temple who is known as Sri Shenbagavalli Thaayar. This Shrine is made up of multiple pillars and Sri Shenbagavalli Thaayar is seen East facing and in a sitting posture. The Gopuram of the Thaayars Sannadhi has two coloured Idols of Sri Garudalwar with a centrally seated Sri Gajalakshmi. Suklapaksha Ashtami is very important for Sri Shenbavalli Thaayar. It is believed that Sri Shenbagavalli Thaayar did Penance and sought a place in the bosom of the Perumal and hence Suklapaksha Ashtami is an important day here. Homam done here on Suklapaksha Ashtami is very important.
The Temple has its own Madapalli and Dadiaradhana Koodam. Close to these is a Yaaga Saalai. The Temple has Thulabhaara facilities for the sake of the Devotees. Chithrai Varusha Pirappu, Vasanthothsavam, Ramanujar's Thirunakshatram, Vaikasi Brahmmothsavam, Aani Thirumanjanam, Thiruvaadipooram, Pavithrothsavam, Sri Jayanthi Urchavam, Navarathri, Maha Ashtami, Thiru Karthigai, Full Month of Margazhi and Thai Pongal are some of the festivals that are celebrated in a grand manner. Close to the Temple is the Brindavanam of Sri Periyakaliyan Ramanuja Jeeyar. This Temple is said to remove all types of Marriage Obstacles. Likewise issueless couple who come here are Blessed with a Kid very soon. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is Shenbaga Maram and the Pushkarani is named after Nandhi Bhagwan and is called Nandhi Pushkarani. This Temple is under the care and control of Sri Vanamamalai Madam and not under the HR & CE.
