Sri Chakrapani Temple is located in Kumbakonam at the confluence of River Cauvery and River Arasalaru. This Temple was built centuries before by the Chola King from 1620 onwards. Though the Cholas started to build this Temple it was actually the later Nayak Rulers who evinced keen interest and developed this Temple to this level. This is the one and only Temple of its kind for Chakrathalwar and hence called as Sri Chakrapani Temple. The Temple has a five tiered East facing Rajagopuram and there is another entrance too from the Southern side. The Southern side entrance does not have any Rajagopuram but instead there are few Idols of Gods displayed over the Gopuram. The Presiding Deity is Sri Chakrapani or Charathalwar who is an incarnation of Maha Vishnu. It is believed that Maha Vishnu appeared in the form of a Discuss or a Chakra to bring down the pride of Surya Bhagwan who later became an ardent Devotee of Maha Vishnu. On entering the Temple through the five tiered East facing Rajagopuram there is a circular Mandapam which faces the Moolasthanam. Beyond this is a gold plated Bali Peedam and a Dwajasthambam. To the right of this is the Temple’s Sacred Tank or Pushkarani which is known as Amirtha Pushkarani. To the left of the cirucular Mandapam is the Temples Nandavanam sporting different plants. On going towards the Moolasthanam there is a Sub Shrines for Alwars, Anjaneyar and Desigar. The Preisiding Deity of Sri Chakrapani Temple could be approached by two ways. There is a Uthrayana Passage and a Dakshinayana Passage. Both the entrances have few steps to be climbed they are opened for 6 months through one way. There are four Dwara Baalakas at the threshold of the Moolasthanam and they are as follows: 1) Jayan, 2) Vijayan, 3) Chandan and 4) Prachandan. In the Moolasthanam Sri Chakrapani is seen along with His Consort Sudharshanavalli Thaayar. The Presiding Deity is seen with 8 hands each holding a different a different weapon. A Garudalwar Sannadhi is seen facing the Moolavar. Close to this is a huge life size metal statue of King Sarfoji Maharaj. In the inner peripheral there are Idols for Lakshmi Narasimhar, Thumbikai Alwar, Panchamuga Anjaneyar, Lakshmi Narayana Perumal and Vaikundanatha Perumal. Behind the Moolavar of Chakrathalwar there is an Idol of Lakshmi Narayana Perumal which is a delight to see. Goddess Vijayavalli Thaayar is seen in a separate Shrine and Devotees have to climb around 10 to 15 steps to reach the Thaayar Sannadhi which is adjacent to the Moolavar Sannadhi. In the outer peripheral there is a wonderful Idol of Sri Krishna dancing with the Serpant Kaalingan. This Kaalinga Narthana Krishnan attracts a lot of Devotees. Generally Vilva Archanai is done only in Shiva Temples. This is one rare Vaishnava Temple where Vilva Archanai is done to the Perumal. This Temple is renowned as a Baskara Kshethram.
