This Temple is also known as Sri Mahalingeshwarar Temple and Tiruvdaimarudur is situated close to Kumbakonam, a Temple Town. The actual name of the Temple is Sri Perunalamamulayammai Udanaya Sri Mahalinga Swamy Temple. At the outset the Temple has a tinned roofing and to the right of it is the Temple’s Pushkarani or Sacred Tank. The Temple has a multi pillared Rajagopuram and is East facing. Two Idols of Ganapathy and Subramaniya Swamy are found close to the basement of the Rajagopuram. Beyond it is a huge multi pillared Mandapam and a Padithurai Vinayagar is seen there. To the right of this is the Temple Office. Like all Shiva Temples a Bali Peedam, a Dwajasthambam and a Nandhi Vaahanam is seen facing the Moolasthanam. Another huge white Nandhi Bhagwan is also seen facing the Sanctum Sanctorum. On both the flanks leading along the multi pillared Mandapam various images of Gods and Goddesses are beautifully drawn and preserved. The Temple’s Vaahanams too are preserved here. There are two coloured Idols of Dwara Baalakas on the outer threshold whereas two black Dwara Baalaka Idols are to be seen in the next threshold. Beyond this a Idols of Vinayagar and Adhikara Nandhi could be seen. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Mahalingaswamy and He is an incarnation of God Shiva. He is seen here in the form of a Shiva Lingam and He Blesses His Devotees along with His Consort Goddess Brahatsundaragujambigai. There is another exclusive Shrine for Goddess Mookambikai. Around the Koshtam Vinayagar, Dhaksinamoorthy, Lingothbhavar, Brahmma, Chandikeshwarar and Durgai Idols are seen. In the inner peripheral the 63 Naayanmaars are placed equidistantly. Close to this the Sapthamathas, Parasakthi, Uma Maheshwarar, Arthanareeswarar, Gangai Amman, Bhairavar, Usha Devi, Suryan and Chandran Idols are seen along with several other Deities. In the outer peripheral a Sub Shrine for Gnanvel Murugan is found. The Ambal Sannadhi is built in a huge multi pillared Mandapam and Brahatsundaragujambigai is also called as Perunalamamulayammai and She is East facing. Around the Ambal Koshtam Dwara Ganapathy, Uruthi Rani and Manonmani, Sambavi, 2 Brahmmis, Chandikeshwari and Maheswari are seen. There are Sub Shrine for Pralayakara Rudhrar, Eka Nayanayakar, Biruman and Chola Lingam, Sahasra Lingam and Chera Lingam. Marudhavaanar and Anbirpiriyal could be seen in a separate Sub Shrine. There is a Naalvar Mandapam which is now converted as an Annadhana Koodam. This Temple is considered to be one of the seven major Shiva Temple. Here the Presiding Deity is considered as Jothimayalingam. This Temple is considered as one of the Paadal Petra Sthalam dedicated to God Shiva. This Incriptions of this Temple suggests that Kings of Pandya, Chola, Nayaks and Maratha Dynasty worked heard in developing this Temple. This Temple is one of the largest Temple in Tamil Nadu and consists of four Rajagopuram. This Temple is currently being maintained and administered by Thiruvaduthurai Adheenam. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is Marudha Maram and this Temple has four Sacred Tanks and they are Karunyamirdha Theertham, Soma Theertham, Kanaga Theertham, Kalyana Theertham and Iravatha Theertham. Since Tiruvidaimaruthur happens to be a stone throw distance away from the famous Temple Town of Kumbakonam Devotees and Tourists not only from Tamil Nadu but from distant North and North Eastern States keep coming here in overwhelming numbers. Pradosham, Maha Shivarathiri, Thiru Karthigai are some of the festivals celebrated in a grand manner. Devotees get relieved from Brahmahathi Dhosham here and hence considered as Brahmahathi Dhosha Parihara Sthalam or Brammahathi Dosha Nivarthi Sthalam.
