Sri Airavatesvarar Temple, Darasuram, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu

  • Sri Airavatesvarar Temple, Darasuram, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu

Sri Airavatheshwarar Temple is located in Dharasuram quite close to Kumbakonam Town. King Raja Raja Chola II has built this Temple along with the Thanjai Periya Kovil. This is an east facing Temple with a Neivedhya Peedam and a Nandhi Vaahanam facing the Moolasthanam. The steps leading tot he Nandhi Vaahanam gives out various musical sounds when tapped. There are two huge Dwara Baalakas on either side of the Moolasthanam. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Airavatheswarar who is in the form of a Shiva Lingam and is considered as an incarnation of God Shiva. Around the Koshtam of the Moolasthanam there are Idols of Vinayagar, Dhakshinamoorthy, Lingothbhavar, Arthanareeswarar, Ashtabuja Bhairavar and Vishnu Durgai. His Consort is known here as Sri Deiva Nayagi Ambal or Vedha Nayaki Ambal and She is seen in a standing posture. Some refer Her as Periya Nayaki Ambal and She has a separate Shrine. Many of the Gopurams and Sub Shrine of this Temple are in ruins and have started crumbling under the vageries of Nature. The main Moolavar Shrine and the Ambal Shrine are few of the Shrines that still stand amongst the ruins. This Temple has two Sun Dials which can be seen in this Temple as Wheels of the Chariot. Airavatham refers to the Divine White Elephant. It is construed that this Divine White Elephant had a Holy Dip in the Temple's Sacred Tank or Pushkarani and got cleansed and looked White thereafter. The galloping Horse and the Chariot have been chiseled exquisitely. Hence this Temple is refered by some as Karak Kovil. There are only three other Karak Kovils apart from Sri Airavatheshwarar Temple, Darasuram and they are 1) Thanjai Periya Kovil, 2) Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple and 3) Thirubuvanam Temple. This Temple was built by Raja Raja Chola II in the 11th Century. There are Idols of many Gods and Goddess like Indra, Agni, Varuna, Vaayu, Brahmma, Surya, Maha Vishnu, Saptamitrikas, Durga, Saraswathi, Sri Devi  Ganga, Yamuna, Subramanya, Ganesha, Kama, Rati and others. This Temple complex is covered with beautiful garden and lush green lawn. There is a Sacred Tank which is of 228 feet  wide and considered to be very Sacred and bathing here is believed to cure all ailments of the Devotees. This Temple has been declared as UNESCO Monument and the ASI monitors this Temple. The Thanjavur Palace Devasthanam leads his helping hand at times of need.
