Kumbakonam is the Temple Town of Thanjavur District. The name Kumbakonam is derived from the name of this Temple's Presiding Deity who is known as Sri Kumbeswarar. This is an East facing Temple with a 9 tiered Rajagopuram with an imposing height of around 128 feet. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Adhi Kumbheswarar who is none other than God Shiva Himself. He Blesses His Devotees along with His Consort Goddess Mangalambigai Ambal who is an incarnation of Goddess Parvathy. Sri Kumbeshwarar is seen in His Sanctum Sanctorum in the form of a Shiva Lingam. Sri Ganapathi and Sri Subramaniyar are seen as Dwarabalagaas. Around the Koshtam there are Idols for Sri Narthana Ganapathi, Sri Dhakshinamurthy, Sri Lingothbavar, Sri Brahmma, Sri Durgai and Sri Chandikeswarar. There is a Shrine for Sri Somaskandar near the Moolavar Sannadhi.
In the inner peripheral there are Idols for 63 Naayanmaargal, Sri Veerabadhrar, Saptha Maathas, Sri Valam Suzhi Vinayagar, Sri Kasi Viswanathar, Sri Visalakshi and Sri Pichaadanar. There are several other Lingams like Sri Sahasralingam, Sri Aagasalingam, Sri Annapoorani, Sri Gajalakshmi, Sri Mahalakshmi, Sri Saraswathy and Sri Jeshta Devi. Sri Mangalambikai Ambal is the Consort of Sri Adhi Kumbeshwarar and She is also called as Sri Mandhira Peeteshwari and She has Her own Shrine. Around the Koshtam of Goddess Mangalambigai there are Idols for Sri Ganga, Sri Gowri, Sri Ambika, Sri Kanaambika and Sri Uma. Near the Ambal's Shrine there are Sub Shrines for Sri Sukhra Vaara Amman or Sri Aadi Poora Amman and sri Navaneetha Ganapathy.
The Idols for Sri Vedamurthy, Sri Bhairavar, Sri Kaala Bhairavar, Sri Govindha Deekshidhar, Sri Dharma Saastha and Sri Naagambal are also seen here. The Temple has a Madapalli or a Temple Kitchen and the Temple provides Annadhaanam to its Devotees. There are two huge layers of concentric compound walls and with this there is a Temple Garden or a Kovil Nandhavanam in which many plants, Trees and saplings are to be found. There is a Sr.Citizen's Waiting Room and Wheel Chair facilities for the disabled are available. Since this Temple is revered in 7th century's Tamil Holy text Thevaram this Temple is considered as one of the Paadal Petra Sthalam. This Temple is built on a whopping 30181 Sq.ft of land and has, in all four Rajagopurams. This Temple was built by Chola Kings in the 9th Century and was later developed by Vijayanagara Kings. There is a sixteen pillared hall where 27 stars and 12 zodiacs signes are sculpted in a single stone and which was built by Vijayanagara Kings. This Temple has five silver plated chariots which are used during the special festivals. Every year thousands of Devotees visit this Temple to get the Blessings of Sri Adhi Kumbeswarar. Those without Kids come here and Pray and it is believed that such Childless Devotees are Blessed with a Kid very soon. Maha Shivarathiri, Pradosham, Thiru Karthigai, Aarudhra Dharisanam are some of the festivals celebrated here in a grand manner.
