THis Temple is located in Kumbakonam Town. Kumbakonam derives it name from this Temple's Presiding Deity who is known as Kumbeswarar. This is a East facing 9 tiered Rajagopuram with an imposing height of around 128 feet. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Adhi Kumbheswarar who is none other than Lord Shiva Himself. He Blesses His Devotees along with His Consort Goddess Mangalambigai Ambal who is an incarnation of Goddess Parvathy. Kumbeshwarar is seen in His Sanctum Sanctorum in the form of a Shiva Lingam. Ganapathi and Subramaniyar are seen as Dwarabalagaas. Around the Koshtam there are Idols for Narthana Ganapathi, Dhakshnamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahmma, Durgai and Chandikeswarar. There is a Shrine for Somaskandar near the Moolavar Sannadhi. In the inner peripheral there are Idols for 63 Nayanmaargal, Veerabadhrar, Saptha Maathas, Valam Suzhi Vinayagar, Kasi Viswanathar, Visalakshi and Pichaadanar. There are several other Lingams like Sahasralingam, Aagasalingam, Annapoorani, Gajalakshmi, Mahalakshmi, Saraswathy and Jeshta Devi. Mangalambikai Ambal is the Consort of this God and She is also called as Mandhira Peeteshwari and She has Her own Shrine. Around the Koshtam of Goddess Mangalambigai there are Idols for Ganga, Gowri, Ambika, Kanaambika and Uma.  Near the Ambal Shrine there are Sub Shrines for Sukhra Vaara Amman or Aadi Poora Amman and Navaneetha Ganapathy. The Idols for Vedamurthy, Bhairavar, Kaala Bhairavar, Govindha Deekshidhar, Dharma Saastha and Sri Naagambal are also seen here. The Temple has a Madapalli or a Temple Kitchen and the Temple provide Annadhaanam to its Devotees. There are two huge layers of concentric compound walls and with this there is a Temple Garden or a Kovil Nandhavanam in which many plants, Trees and saplings are to be found. There is a Sr.Citizen's Waiting Room and Wheel Chair facilities for the disabled are available. Since this Temple is revered in 7th century's Tamil Holy text Thevaram this Temple is considered as one of the Paadal Petra Sthalam. This Temple is built on a whopping 30181 Sq.ft of land and has in all  four Rajagopurams. This Temple was built by Chola Kings in the 9th Century and was later developed by Vijayanagara Kings. There is a sixteen pillared hall where 27 stars and 12 zodiacs signes are sculpted in a single stone and which was built by Vijayanagara Kings. This Temple has five silver plated chariots which are used during the special festivals. Every year thousands of Devotees visit this Temple to get the Blessings of Adhi Kumbeswarar. Those without Kids come here and Pray and it is believed that such Childless Devotees are Blessed with a Kid very soon. Maha Shivarathiri, Pradosham, Thiru Karthigai, Aarudhra Dharisanam are some of the festivals celebrated here in a grand manner.
